Gold has appeared to be very volatile - here's a view (poor though it is) from a few days ago. (If I find a better view, or one from the immediate three days prior to Brexit, I'll update it.)

Now, what happens to that apparent large scatter when you re-scale, and note the post-Brexit vote change and how that makes the "variation" of the past few weeks dwindle to "noise".
