40%

im not a sorter but am an agressive stacker and have recently been looking at 40% because the prices are suppressed and there is not alot of competition on ebay. i'm always looking to diversify the stack so i just picked up 3 rolls at $4.30 a pop. when i went to coinflation i notice that they dont give any value for the copper content. when copper reaches new levels will 40% silver be looked at for its copper content as well as a silver content?

Dang it. I was hoping I was the only one that preferred 40%. ;)

I've been wondering the same thing. I LIKE 40% silver as it gives me a chance to invest in two metals at the same time. Just a guess but maybe it's because the copper becomes useless, for lack of a better word, after melting said coins. Hopefully someone with knowledge can chime in.

First, coinflation accounts for the copper content in the detail page for the coin. The front page does not, but the detail does.

Second, the answer to your question: "No". You will not see a "bonus" to the values of 40% or 90% silver based on higher copper prices.

Ok, so now I'm wondering if Coinflation is including the copper value in their stated value for a 40% half, or that it is silver content only? As far as your original question, I doubt the 60% copper value would ever even make up the difference the smelters now discount when they buy silver-bearing coins.

No, they do not. It says that a 40% half contains .1479 ounces of silver, and when silver is at $33.38/oz, the total is $4.94 per half. If you do the math:

.1479(33.38) = $4.9369.

So, they must only use the value of silver in the half dollar.

the present value of the copper in a 40% half is only about 5.1 cents

I also like the 40% , both kennedy and Ikes.

I was wondering about their copper content also, on Monex's site they show the 40% spot price higher than the 90% spot price. So that means they are counting the copper value along with the silver for bullion trading.

I like 40% and there is a coin shop I frequent that likes them too. Two weeks ago he was trading at .9 below spot and 1.5 below for cash. I thought that was acceptable considering the halves were acquired for spot. He's not overly concerned about condition either as long as there is no significant wear.

With the way silver is marching up, it might be a good idea to concentrate on 40% on ebay.

40% you can still get for under spot on ebay.

I suppose one day it might sell for a premium like 90% does now...

Yea, the 40% Ikes are hard to come by. I see more of them at local auctions than on eBay.

Here is the link to Monex's "Live Prices" http://www.monex.com/liveprices

Here is their current prices as of this post. 40% coins are $ 0.68 higher than 90% coins.
Commodity Last Change Open High Low
90% Silver Coins 33.64 0.49 33.21 33.74 33.13
40% Silver Coins 34.32 0.50 33.88 34.42 33.80

i think 40% is the perfect thing for me to be buying right now especially at these prices. my stack is pretty established with mostly .999 so accumulating the 40% now just make sense to me, i'll let everyone else drive up the prices on the 90% and .999 stuff and i'll just sit back and keep buying 40% at under spot.

i just snagged another lot of 200 today for $4.30 a pop which worked out to $29.48 an ounce, $4+ under spot

Locally (Ketchikan, Alaska) I have not seen a half dollar in 25 years. I have seen about a half dozen dollar coins of one sort or another over that time. One cashier says she grabs every half dollar she sees. Can't see why.
