I Had A Dream Last Night

It was a typical day, nothing special as I went about on my normal routine. My normal procedure is to look at the change handed back diligently, always pretending not to notice the clerks glaring eyes, as they feel my distrust in there use of a register. Not that I don't mind explaining what it is I'm looking for, it's just that no one ever really cares. So I figure who cares let them feel like I was checking up on their ability. Even though we both know that is not the case.

It was in the course of executing the mundane tasks of everyday life that I must have happened upon it. Although it was not until later she would reveal herself. Which is odd in that I practice my change checking rather regularly and the fact that it crept up on me is weird. I still can't recall where it was that this faithful little coin landed in my pocket. Was it the pool store? No, I found a 1959 penny their. Hhmmph. I know it was not the gas station, because I used the card. Hhmmph.

Well, it was very odd to not remember. I am kind of fond of my normal remembrance skills. Could it be I am loosing my memory? Nah, I remember that first kiss with Suzy behind the shed that went on for what seemed like an hour as we lashed our tongues, dribbling more spit down our chins than my old 300 lost oil. No, my memory is still in tact. Hhmmph. Yeah but that was long term memory, what about something more recent, nothing exciting. Hhmmph. I am getting old.

There we were in our living room swapping some kind of story I am sure I had heard before but just could not recollect. When I decided to....Hhmmph....what was I doing?

Oh yeah get another beer for my guests, when I took a side ways jaunt. I reached into my pocket to remove my daily change and took one more glance, as I have done so many times before. There right before my eyes, like the glimmer of Eldorado, was a shiny 1954 quarter. Good old George representing himself in fine accord. This sudden discovery apparently revealed a [shucks] eatin grin, for my wife woke me from my awe with a question, "what are you smiling at?"

Although we have been married for quite some time, the exact date eludes me at the present. Hhmmph. She would not understand the elation I was feeling that very moment. For this was my first. This was that cherry moment that happens only once in a lifetime and here I was enveloping myself with its glory.

I passed it around like a proud Papa, delicately holding my hands ready to catch a wayward slip to prevent any unintended. I gleaned ear to ear hurrying along the on lookers so as to place her in the tray of amongst her peers.

It was a good day!

What was I doing again, Hhmmph.
