Another Xmas mystery: 1876 quarter, but what mint mark??

I have not yet weighed this, but it's an 1876 quarter, given to me with the belief that it was from CC. Prob is, I only see 1 'C', and its location doesn't seem to match others that I've reviewed online. I will post pics.

Really worn, wear looks authentic, back much worse than the front. I don't easily see tell-tale signs of counterfeit. The existing "C" is in the right place. It could be as simple as a grease error not letting the second "C" punch. A mint error?

I don't have a book with me, but a Redbook in hand is a useful tool, to me better than online, you can get a used one pretty cheap on thriftbooks.com if you don't mind a few years old. For coin pictures and content the year really doesn't matter.

You have piqued my interest.

1876-O

Put it on a scanner, set the DPI to 2400 or higher. This will really show all the details.

Well, that's where the plot thickens: Redbook has no listing of 1876-O quarters...

I wonder if this so-called mint mark could have been taken off a different coin and glued onto the 1876. The following year there was an 1877 S over horizontal S (nice photo in the Redbook), but if I had to speculate I'd guess it was a mintmark glued onto the coin- and it DOESN'T look like it came from a seated quarter to me. It may have come from a different denomination or type coin. I'm definitely not an expert on this but my radar goes off when I feel that something just doesn't look right. And this one doesn't look right. Sorry about that. Also, it isn't likely worth the expense of paying to get it certified. You might try going to one of those shows where people give verbal opinions and see what they say.

Thanks for the feedback. I took it to a local coin shop and the owner felt confident it was really cc. He went to the Redbook site and showed me how mint marks for this same mint were not always 100% in the same place all of the time.

I have decided to send this one to be graded. Is NGC good to go with?

Have your local dealer submit it for you. He will charge you a handling fee, but it should be less than the membership fee.

Also, in my observation, PCGS seems to be favored for USA coins while NGC moreso for Forieign coins.

Looks like an 1876-CC to me. The leftmost c is well worn. This is a common coin from that era.

Here's an example of another worn 1876-CC on EBAY:

Wow! Thanks for those pics and info! It's amazing to see how far left that first C really is!!

I will take that as confirmation that mine is the real deal then. Thanks so much!!
