The guy in the clip (1:45) claims that you can distinguish Silver and Silver-Plate by smell. Silver smells "sweet" while Silver-plate has a "sulfur/sour" smell.

So.....truth, or false?

I'm going to go ahead and call bull on that one. If you roll a spoon in crap it's going to smell like crap.

So I sniffed some silver plated items I have and some sterling stuff. I can't tell the difference. I can't think of why a plated object would smell any different than a solid silver item. I think when you plate something it is in pure silver and solid sterling has 7.5 % copper in it, but I know that pure silver does not smell like sulfur. I would not bring items to that fellow for appraisal.

I know that I couldn't tell a difference but....this gives me an idea. I'm quite sure that I could train my dog to sniff out the good stuff if there is even a faint hint of a difference.

Are you asking if the guy in the video has been sniffing too many chemicals?
