Tips on sending silver to a refiner?

Does anyone have any tips on sending silver to a refiner?

I have some sterling flatware that didn't sell on eBay. Refiner says I have to remove any filled handles.

I guess that makes sense but not sure how to go about it - do you just use pliers? tin snips?

Yes, a combination of pliers and tin snips would do the job.

Rodebaugh over on BS buys them too if you want to touch base with him. He's so easy to deal with.

I've sold to a few places and a hammer and screwdriver will get it done easily.
They don't care what it looks like for the most part, as long as it is clean.

I have dealt with Brian & Tim at Vermillion Enterprises at Spring Hill, Fl several times. Just last week I sent them a box containing 4110 grams of scrap sterling and yes he does pay 90% of spot/melt. About every other day he posts a live video on Youtube where he updates all his buy and sell prices, just enter VERMILLION ENTERPRISES on Youtube and you can view his videos; he listed a new one this morning. Happy stacking, Don

Does anyone know a place that takes 40% and 35% silver that pays a fair price. Looking to clean up my stack.

my understanding is that those are not worth refining so you would get more selling to someone who doesnt want to melt them.

For 40% Kennedy halves, which are 60% copper and 40% silver, the relatively low silver content simply takes more time and resources to recover silver. Relatively small discount.

35% War Nickels are a different thing altogether. The 9% manganese complicates efforts, adding more than a few steps to recovery of silver prior to any refining. Time and resources equals money. Relatively large discount is more than appropriate.

Personally, unless the coins are heavily damaged, I would not sell to refiners or refineries.

Time for more coffee.

I too have heard the manganese in the nickels is very hard to work with because it is hazardous. If I had a bunch of wartime nickels, I’d try to figure a way to trade them for 40% halves or even 90% if possible.

Lolol.buy high, sell low. Is how my life goes.

I sold off all my silver at $22.

I got .50 for the nickels. When melt was ,95

But after crying about it, you have think that it is still a greater ROI than just about any. Savings instrument.

Don’t know where you do your banking, but Charles Schwab’s Value Advantage (Symbol: SWVXX) is currently paying 4.19%. That is NOT a teaser rate. The minimum investment is only $1 and you only need to give 1 working day of notice to get your money out. That’s pretty hard to beat when compared to something like a CD. I worked for Schwab for almost 20 years and still have many friends there. They are legit!

Brian is probably the most honest and fair dealers I've ever dealt with.
