If You Were Going To Buy Fractional Gold Coins...

Postby argent_pur » Sat Sep 25, 2010 7:17 pm

What would you buy? The old stand-by's (Eagles, Maples, Phils, Krugs)--or perhaps some European fractionals? Perhaps gold pesos from Mexico, Cuba, Bolivia, etc..?
Just for fun..we need some of that too

The Swiss 20 francs are my personal favorite 8-)

I only own Eagles, aside from 1maple, and 1 panda. I bought them when they were 100 each. Now some places show 155. So. I got a rather good return on them.

I kind of like to split mine between Eagles, Maples, and Kruggerands. I also like the kangaroos and Lunar series from Australia. I don't get to buy too much gold, so when I do, I like to get different coins. Just so I have something different to look at. However, having said that, I have never seen a gold coin that I didn't like.

I've had good luck with GAE fracs both selling and trading. Eagles are all I have of modern gold bullion coins. I don't care much for the premiums but I never complain when I make a profit on them. They make good gifts and they'll be easier to move around when and if (fingers and toes crossed that it won't) Section 9006 goes into effect in 2012.

Fractional GAEs seem to be the most liquid, but also seem to carry a high premium. Sometimes, foreign GOLD can be bought at or near spot. A few of my favorites: I bought a Prussian 20 Mark, a BU GB Sovereign, and a Mexican Dos Pesos all at spot at a show today. You should gotta be looking for good deals. However, it is best to stick to the widely recognized stuff, unless its for your collection appetite. I'd stay away from the Chinese pandas (too much risk of fakes), and the 1/20 TOZ stuff (too high a premium for GOLD), but Krug, Philharmonic, and well known others are OK.

Bon Appetite everyone; GOLD du jour!!!

I like 1/10 oz Eagles and Maples myself.

Check this deal out!

1st National Reserve has a promotional offer for a 1/10 oz Gold Eagle for $138 (shipping and handling is free). This is an unbeatable price.

You can only order one, but it is a great price!

Like Country indicates, sometimes you can buy foreign fractionals more inexpensively... which means more for your money. If YOU like it, then buy it. If owning some exotic gold coins from foreign countries stimulates you to buy them, then it's a good thing. Much better than waiting for a dip that may never come. By the time the public catches up with the idea of gold ownership, all forms of gold will become much more liquid. Sure, it will always be easiest to sell the most common ASE fractionals, or Maples, or Krugerrands... but you won't lack for bidders when you try and sell yours. As gold becomes unaffordable in ounce size, the current disparity between recognition of the standard fractionals and the lesser known pieces will continue to shrink, and you'll begin to hear people ask "do you know where I can buy some roosters? Or angels?" 8-)

I'm just a little leery of bullion from China and Mexico. Just saying, ya know. Make mine GAEs, Maples or Philharmonics. ( I'm an xpert, I own a 1/10 Eagle)
