Is this a 6oz or 8 oz American Silver Eagle?

i know that a few mints made these and there are two different types, a 6 oz and 8 oz version. Below I have provided scans, the size of the coin makes it difficult to weigh it on the scale i normally use, as a decent amount of the coin hangs off the scale. It came with no mint coa or paper work. Also has no serial # on the edge.

It weighs a half pound. The "1/2 LB." was a clue... ;)

Not trying to be smart with you. But that's what is weighs. Which is about 7.3 troy ounces.

I think the question is based on whether the 1/2 "pound" is a 1/2 troy pound or a 1/2 Avoirdupois pound. A troy pound is 12 troy oz, a Avoirdupois pound is 16 Avoirdupois oz. to answer your question..I have no idea

but, I don't see why overhang off the scale would hurt, assuming it only was touching the scale and nothing else.

Put a glass on your scale, zero it out, and set this beast on top of the glass. That should give you an accurate reading.

Or if you don't have one, bring it to the grocery store and throw it on the produce scale. You may incur strange looks. :?

It's a "normal" pound, Avoirdupois. A Troy pound may exist in tables but it hasn't actually been in use in more than 100 years. Not sure why it comes up. Actually the only place I've ever seen it used is in ebay ads, to confuse buyers.

Take it to the PO and have one of the folks there weigh it.

Heck I have had fish (on many occasion) weighed on a postal scale.....flopping and leeking water. They should welcome your coin over a fish.

I have to assume it comes up because precious metals are normally weighed in troy oz, so it would only make sense to use troy pounds.

Actually, there are some modern bullion products marked "troy pound." It's not dead yet...

Well its not the same as the one the US mint put out, the US mint one says (one half pound), this one says 1/2 pound. Oddly enough the one the mint made says its 1/2 pound or 8 troy oz, which is not possible it can be both.

OK so i did some math and 1/2 pound is close to 8 troy oz, 8 troy oz is .54xxxxx of a "normal" pound. so I guess I will take it.

now..just weigh yours and figure how many grams it is...

Well, there are 8 ounces in a cup. Does the coin fit in a standard measuring cup? :D
