The next 2010 5oz ATB "P"? Ultimate 5 coin set??

Postby hejira11 » Tue May 17, 2011 1:06 pm

I know it officially says the remaining 3 ATB 5oz "P" coins are TBA, but does anyone know when th next one is going up? Also, I wanted to create a thread to talk about the future value and scarcity of owning the 2010 "P" set. I understand the math 27,000 vs 33,000. But, this is my current fascination and didnt want to go off topic on anyone elses thread.

Are these the sort of coins that one would have graded? I am not usually a numismatic value type person. but I know a good bet when i see one. I just want to learn about what it is I am buying. I bought a storage box from the Bay, like the one shown in the Home Shopping Network. It was definetly made for slabbed coins....not necessaryily graded...but do I want to mess with the presentation of the "P" release?

Well as far as when it will come out, if they do one a month, they will get the 2010's and the 2011's out this year, so that's my guess as to what they will do.

I am stopping at the 2010 set. I understand the mint will quadruple the #'s minted for the 2011' sets. This reduces the rarity and returns them to a strictly bullion investment. I will buy regular release ATB's for 2011 on...unless they reduce output one year.

how do you know what the mintages will be for 2011? The mint is actually doing something illegal right now. They are stamping 2010 coins in 2011.

Someone with more knowledge will have to back me up on these #'s , but I believe they are minting 100,000 of each 2011 coin. I also am under the impression that the 2010 coins are done. They minted 33,000 of each coin as bullion and 27,000 of each as an UNC "P" designation. The reason being mint had problems producing this initial run of historically large coins.

Why is it illegal to fulfill a pre published mintage amount? I can accept they had problems. If they decided to increase the published 2010 coin amounts then I will be one pissed off camper.

Actualy the good folks at the mint have had these made and setting since late 2010. They are just now selling them.

Thats the #1 reason that the mintage is so low on the 2010s......It was a rush production late in 2010.

do you have any facts to back that up? Not that i am trying to start a debate just wanna know. The thing is to me at least it doesnt seem they would have a TBD date on something that was already minted.

No hard evidence. Just anecdotal. I consider The prices(mint and Ebay). The way the sets were released (read: Cluster F*uck)....The crap condition of what was released (Not one MS-70' set????.) The crashing of the mints website everytime these things go up for sale. It has the look feel and smell of our goverment here. The 2011 stuff is business as usual on every silver vendor's websiter... its the 2010 coins that are rare before they are released.

No judgement, but why is the 2010 mintage such a concern for you? I am usually ALL OVER conspiracy theory, but I pretty much get that our mint bit off more than it could chew with these larger coins. they worked out their kinks, for the most part and now they are playing catch up. while being diplomatic about how the rare 2010's are distributed.

They claim the coins were actually produced in 2010, they are just selling them in 2011. Here's a press release mentioning that http://www.usmint.gov/pressroom/index.cfm?action=press_release&ID=1182 "The United States Mint will strike all 2010-dated numismatic coins by the end of the year, as required by law."

Yep, that’s it.

Popular rumor is the folks at the mint had a heck of a time with the size of the blanks and producing a quality strike. This lead to a delay in production that forced a lower mintage due to time constraints.

If you ask me....Its hype to push a product. Pretty much what hejira11 said. ;)

I am new to neumismatics. Is it customary to have a release like this graded? Or are the sealed container and the mint mark enough to garner a premium on the market? All opinions welcome!

Thanks, I am just trying to wrap my head around how an attractive, top dollar, (future) transaction would look. "All 5 of the 2010 ATB "P" set together." On a seperate but related note I am tring to put together a bullion set of MS-69's... with a customized Presentation box (from Ebay).

I am a bullion saver, but these 2010 ATB's have piqued my collector's intstinct. I really appreciate the opinion of Neumismatic minded RC members like you.
