Got a 1916-D merc in my junk buy!!!!

Well even a blind hog will find an acorn now and then.

So I buy any silver I can get my grubby hands on at less than spot. A local antique store holds back all the silver that comes through the door for me and I stop by every week or two and buy it. This was in a 2 week lot of “garbage silver” that had other yucky, bent, and holed coins. I just counted face and paid the man 20:1. We were both happy. A day passes with this lot and the others setting on my desk before I bust open my loupe to have a look see for items of numismatic interest. I see the 1916 and think before I flip it over, “oh boy, come on baby”. Sure enough, like a scratch off lottery ticket, this corroded turd instantly became worth more than the $2 I paid for it. Damn shame it looks as it does. Although, I never would have got it if it was a grade nicer than this almost poor condition.

1916-D may not be in the wild; but not all have been domesticated out of the junk lots.

Thinking about it. Never thought I would get a coin from my "garbage silver" buys authenticated.

Looks good to me, Chris. Excellent find, and good to hear that it is still possible to find these rarities out there somewhere. Congrats and enjoy the coin.

That looks like a MD dig.

Someone probably dug it up and couldn't be happier to get a dollar for it.

You know what.

I would love to be Rodebaugh for just one day. I'm not sure I'd go metal detecting, antique store huntin, or fishing.

Maybe I'd spend the day carving hobo nickels. I know I wouldn't spend the day at work.

I have a Littleton folder and the 1916 d hole has a factory plug in it that is labeled 'rare'.

Like 'don't even try'.

It's not all great, I have my share of crap like everyone else. I just swallow it and focus on the good stuff. Got a few other projects running right now that should be good realcent topics down the road.

But thanks. And if you were me for a day you would be suprised at how often you got hungry.

Where are you seeing the mint mark? I don't see it on your pictures.

The mint mark is on the left of the leaf and I don't see anything there.

All checks out......Small, high, tight, and tilted right. This should help. ;)

Do to the wear of average examples of this issue the “D” often appears to be larger than it was actually struck. To get a proper idea of how the “D” should look one should note the wear and definition of the vertical bands on the central design and compare it to like examples of slabbed coins. My coin has great details but severe environmental damage.

Ok, cool, I see what you mean now. I was confused as the original picture showed the big "D" from the word dime in the highlight shot so I thought something was wrong.

It looks good!
