I guy brought some stuff in to sell me and one piece that appears to be sterling had a hallmark STG and then under it JMF but no place did it say sterling. Is the STG for sterling?

Yes STG is sterling and the other letters denote a maker, you see STG on Australian silver a lot but not exclusively.
