Thoughts on Gold Creation

Somethings in this world like, building the first airplane, visiting the moon, creating the atom bomb, manufacturing diamonds, teleportion and time travel, Are just impossible, until they happen.

The human mind seems to reject certain ideas, transmutation of certain gas was possible starting in 1917, allot has changed since then.

Do you believe that some groups of people on earth can transmute other elements into gold?
If they could they would keep it secret right?

Well theyve just proved time travel should beimpossible, I think creating gold is also impossible.

Nothing is impossible. We just haven't figured out how to do it yet.

We have tons of gold already.

We have no time travel.

Therefore creating gold is likely much easier as it already *does exist* than creating something which does not currently exist.

Additionally we know exactly what gold is made of (see periodic chart, plus other diagrams or whatever).

Therefore making gold is simply a matter of determining how to create it at the atomic level.

We already can inspect, move, and alter, many things at the atomic level.

Therefore creating gold is likely just a matter of time. Or already. One of the two.

Actually there was an article written a year or so ago on Financialsense.com about a fellow that was able to turn base metals into silver and gold.

The article was named "Modern Day Alchemy" and was written by some contankerous fellow Thogey knows named Buenanderous and mentioned some fellow on this site called "Realcent" named "Kurr"

Luckilly for "us", we can all preform this feat turning base metals into silver and gold if we apply ourselves. :D

How cost effective would it be to make man-made gold? Even if they did have the technology, I would think it would cost too much to make it worth the effort. It obviously would not be an easy process.

Gold creation is possible, but not on earth.
They are created into giant star when they die, just like every other elements in the universe.

Our sun is only big enough to manufacture Helium. It need to be a rare and huge star that collapse into a super nova to make heavy thing like silver or gold.

Gold was actually created by mistake I think in Russia years ago at a nuclear reactor...I am looking at the story to try to find it...The problem was it would cost millions to make an ounce.

I googled it and there was some info about it.

They could make it in a nuclear reactor but the problem is cost and that you would have radioactive gold

Wasn't Goldfinger was trying to make the gold at Fort Knox radioactive so it couldn't be touched/used :-)

Gold synthesis in a nuclear reactorGold was first synthesized from mercury by neutron bombardment in 1941, but the isotopes of gold produced were all radioactive.[3]

Gold can currently be manufactured in a nuclear reactor by irradiation either of platinum or mercury. Since platinum is more expensive than gold, platinum is economically unsuitable as a raw material.

Only the mercury isotope 196Hg, which occurs with a frequency of 0.15% in natural mercury, can be converted to gold by neutron capture, and following electron capture-decay into 197Au with slow neutrons. Other mercury isotopes are converted when irradiated with slow neutrons into one another or formed mercury isotopes, which beta decay into thallium.

Using fast neutrons, the mercury isotope 198Hg, which composes 9.97% of natural mercury, can be converted by splitting off a neutron and becoming 197Hg, which then disintegrates to stable gold. This reaction, however, possesses a smaller activation cross-section and is feasible only with un-moderated reactors.

It is also possible to eject several neutrons with very high energy into the other mercury isotopes in order to form 197Hg. However such high-energy neutrons can be produced only by particle accelerators[clarification needed].

Honestly I think radioactive gold would be worth something.
I mean we could store it in Nevada and issue paper documents, then we could just exchange those paper documents.

I know! I know! Let's make radioactive gold and store it in an underground vault. Then, let's sell shares for it on an ETF. We'll call it RadGold. It's stock ticker symbol will be RGLD. We don't have to worry about inventory problems, such as selling ten times as many shares as we have gold. Why? 'Cause no one will ever be able to take delivery on it! I can hear it now: "Go ahead, Mister, take a brick home with you.... Our hearst.. um, I mean, our ambulance, will be following about a half mile behind you. Hehehe...."

Somebody paid attention in school. ;)

2 points to the PC Wiz didou.

As for the Radioactive gold...... I have some for sale 1500oz........get it while its hot :P

Well i stand corrected.

I had no idea they actually made elements here on earth by blowing a nuclear bomb or in particle accelerator, neither do they can turn lead into gold.

Aha! At last we have price discovery of the true value of gold!

Possible, but at a high enough cost to make that mining is more competitive.

Also it would have to be a stable isotope to be usefull, of course if they unload
the radioactive stuff on "cash for gold" their facility probably isn't set up to
detect radiation. Hmmm? This batch has some odd impurities but it's 90% pure
now and we can refine it.... :-o

Makes me think I should get a geiger counter to check incoming shipments just
incase. ;-)

If I hadn't bought all my stainless steel cutlery over 15 years ago and I had to shop
for it today I'd probably want to run it past a geiger counter based on all the stories
I've read about radioactive metals (including nickel) finding their way into the scrap
stream... -_-

Plutonium, btw, isanother element that occurs naturally no where.

It is all man made, through the process described here.

We have elements that can be "created" that last just a few millionths or billionsth of a second.

Gold schmold...

How about Science making a decent 50 cent cigar? I say if you're gonna dream, dream big.

my bad:
Plutonium was first synthesized in 1940 by a team led by Glenn T. Seaborg and Edwin McMillan at the University of California, Berkeley laboratory by bombarding uranium-238 with deuterons. Trace amounts of plutonium were subsequently discovered in nature.

so there can be traces found in nature. I too stand corrected.

I don't know about the "mistake" part, but I heard of making gold in a reactor about 30 years ago, maybe more. The most expensive gold on the planet.

The technology exists, but doing it is not worth while. By a long shot.

This remind me of a web comic about transmuting of elements by humans:

http://www.smbc-comics.com/index.php?db=comics&id=2273#comic

Not Gold but still humans assembling atoms. :D

Now if we can only find a stable isotope of Roentgenium...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roentgenium

...then copper, silver and Gold would have a 4th member in their group that
might have some interesting properties. I wonder what color of "bling" it would
be.

I say if you don't think gold can be created in a lab... then you probably have the same mindset of the folks 50+ years ago who thought diamonds and gemstones couldn't be created in a lab. Heck... they are creating anti-mater in labs nowadays! I don't see gold as being a real challenge if someone really put their minds to it (with the proper resources).

The technology for that has existed for over 100 years. The price of gold must rise to over $4,000 per ozt to make it profitable. Which, at the rate we are going, is only a few years off! :ugeek:
