How do you deal with the weight of a stone in a gold ring when determining amount of gold? I'm not talking about diamonds, I'm talking about the big blue whatever-it-is they put in my old HS class ring. It is 10k and I can weight it, but how do you account for the weight of the stone?

How do you deal with the weight of a stone in a gold ring?

Probably a propane torch should do it.

Haha! Thanks! I'm not thinking about destroying my class ring, I just want to estimate the amount of gold it contains! :D

post a pic of the piece beside a coin (for size eval of stone).

That will get you a few good answers

I don't have it here. Its something I put in Dad's safe years ago because I didn't wear it much. Next time I'm there I'll grab it.

I think the best way, without destroying the ring, is to take an educated guess. Unless you can find out through the vendor that sold you the ring.

Stones are measured by MM size (you can probably get close converting from inches) -- And you should be able to find a chart somewhere on the web to take the shape and MM size to guesstimate the carat weight. It's probably onyx or quartz

5.0ctw = 1 gram

mens class ring stones weigh between 0.25 and 0.5 dwt on average. we have a handful of popped stones in the office which we use for estimation when a ring with a stone comes in. as far as getting the stone out... easiest way i've found is to put ring on mandrel and attack stone with hammer :D. its quite theraputic after you find out you bought some GP crap by accident the other day.
