Do the numbers: 4145, 4880, and the date Aug 11, 2011, look familiar to any you half sorters? On the bottom of the box of halves I buy, you find these numbers...or a date. This will sound weird, but I have different luck with different numbers. The number 4880 is the worst. In the last 10 boxes which have been marked 4880, I have found 2 forties. There have been numerous coins marked as black J's, red V's with a period....V. , green stripes, a red mark at the back of kennedy's neck (how weird is that?) and other marks. We are sorting each others dumps. I've been sorting halves for a long time. Finds are getting few and far between. Heavy sigh.

5195 and 4448 are the dreaded String & Son half dollar batches in my neck of the woods.

I've gotten 30-40 5195 marked half dollar boxes and every last one was a skunk.

Funny enough I've gotten 8 dime boxes marked 5195 in the past couple weeks and have averaged almost 3 per box with only 1 skunk.

Db23, I used to sort dimes. My record was 32 in one box. But that was a fluke. My next record was like 7 in one box. I have went through as many as 5-6 skunks in a row. Are your dimes in paper rolls or plastic wrapped? I used to get the paper wrapped rolls. I used to open one end with a flat head screw driver, then I kept a damp rag that I could dampen my right hand with. This allowed the paper to kind of stick to my hand and made it easy to push the coins through with a sharpie (magic marker). Oober, I am a long way from you. I am in Alabama. I have been sorting halves uninterrupted for over a year now. I am going to continue because its close to christmas and thats the time of year I have had the best luck. Db23 and Oober, thanks for your input.

I get the same ones you get Dan. I've also got some stamped August 31, 2011 recently. 4145's are definitely better overall than the 4880's, but I do usually get at least something from them. In the past (over a year ago) I have got others, but don't remember what they were marked.

Bama Joe, come to think of it, the dated boxes I have been getting were Aug 31, 2011, not Aug 11, 2011. One of the things I have been trying to figure out is that if I get my halves from Regions, and dump the sorted halves at Wells Fargo, do the coins I turn in wind up at the same fed money center as the center I get my boxed halves from?
