I remember years back coming across an article mentioning that during World War II the U.S. Government melted a substantial amount of Peace dollars. Has anyone heard of such a melt and know any of the particulars such as why the government did this and how substantial was the melt?

Thanks a million tractorman for the great link. This is why I enjoy this forum so much--lots of people with tons of knowledge a willingness to share it.

Incidentally I did some googling and found that original article that I spoke of. In it it states that over 53 million silver dollars (combination of Morgan & Peace) were melted as a result of The Silver Act of 1942.

I know during World War 2, 15 tons of silver was obtained by the US Treasury department for the Manhattan project.
I wonder if it came from silver bars in storage or from another silver dollar melt like they did in World War 1.
