Yes! Been wondering if some or most garbage truck drivers did this. Seems like the perfect occupation for a scrapper! Good mix of scrap! Man, $500/month; that's like an extra $6000 a year!

I get most of my scrap from my garbage rout as well. Your numbers are about the same as mine. I'm the only driver who saves it from the company I work for.

I thought in Canada it was law that you have to recycle? That is what a former Canadian colleague told me. :?: I guess some still don't seperate recyclables?

Bank teller or garbage truck driver, I would get fired doing either.

No work would get done. ;)

That's got to be tough to run your schedule and pick metal.

Ya'll must hawk for the good stuff on the top and drive on..

onebite, lot sizes are small, when I worked for a scrap ward, small lots like yours got much lower prices.

I store all my scrap in the cab. I usually empty the cab about 3-4 times a day. Large things I sometimes just set next to the dumpster and come back to get it. So far I've had no complaints, but I work in a small town and everybody knows whats going on. At most companies they would not allow this. I work for very small company and am good friends with the owers. With doing all this extra stuff I still get my rout done faster than everybody else.

As I learn about scrapping (I have banked 35.50 so far in aluminum and a little bit of copper) I was wondering if there are any full-time scrappers on here. Or does everyone pretty much do this as a side line project for extra income?

That's a lot of glass! Are they still paying .05 a pound? How do you store your broken glass? Box it up?

i turn in each day. they are providing large 'bags' . which they are getting 2500+ pounds into. whereas before breaking, they were getting 700.

even a 'trash can ' of all broken is too heavy to lift. so , storing would be a problem. maybe if you had access to a bunch of 5 gallon pails. or banana boxes.

as they will be moving in a couple weeks. there may be a short timeframe where storing will have to be the option.

btw, they now would like it if it was sorted to color. brown, green, clear. i do use trash barrels for the clear and green, as there is only that much per day . ie 95% brown, 4% clear, 1% green.

Today in So. AZ

24 lbs Alum Cans .74 lb (price drop .07 from Sept)

Thought this would be my last load for the year as it has been slow, but our dryer went out (17 years old!) So going to get a new washer and dryer. At least I'll get back .095 a pound on the old ones

Took my last load in for this year.

Total take for the year, $1267.07!

Most of it was work metal and a little was my bike road metal.
Pedal to the metal.

CrazyTom's equation; More Traffic + More Miles = More Metal
