Is it OK to store CU cents in steel 55 gallon drums?

Postby henrysmedford » Mon Dec 12, 2011 9:14 am

I am thinking of moving up to the 55 gallon steel drums. And known problems with steel and copper?

There is a significant galvanic couple between copper/brass and iron/carbon steel, so to avoid corrosion for long-term storage I would ensure there is a plastic drum liner in place to isolate the two (or store them in separate bags within the drum), and depending on your environment I would include some desiccant as well.

+1 to what Camaro said. Also make sure you seal the bags well. The moisture absorber will only do so good so you have to help it by sealing the bags.

Also if you are putting it in your shed your should be ok putting 1 drum in a 3 by 3 or (2x2) area, but I think you will run into problems if you start putting mutiple drums next to each other.

with respect to the moisture absorber, if its the same stuff I use in my gun safe, you can increase its effectivness by cooking it at 240 deg in an oven.

Here is a website about making your own dessicant pack. For something as large as a 55 Gal durm, this may be the way to go: http://rumkin.com/reference/desiccant/

Also, I have purchased from this company ( http://www.silicagelpackets.com/) the 1 gram packets and put 2 packets in each $50 bag. I fold the bags to get as much air out and then seal them with tape.

Hope this helps.

Hey Joe...I am using a phenolic lined 55 gallon drum. Costs a little more but no steel to brass action. And as...
Copper Catcher wrote:needing a forklift to move
it is very heavy. I marked the inside of the drum with an inch scale using a black marker, located my counter on top and I add 10,000 cents per addition and mark the lid with each addition. I was using a poly drum but when I went over half full I was concerned about it splitting open...so I have switched to metal.

I actually use cat liter containers (the big ones with handles) they hold right around 200 lbs of pennies.

This type:

I recently bought two brand new 55 gallon drums to start putting the CU in after I move so I'm glad you brought this up. They will be stored in a garage which is concrete and somewhat heated but well insulated. Now that I read this, what about lining the drums with the big, very heavy contractor garbage bags or even two of them?
Would that be enough to keep the CU and the steel separated?

Contractor garbage bags are not enough. Get barrel heavy liners and double bag. Maybe source at somewhere that uses food grade barrels - the liners are cheap so you might get a couple for the asking.

I have a 55 gallon plastic (non PVC) drum I store pennies in. It has a "sealed" lid just a clamp more or less. It is currently in my shed in northern wv. Shed is not heated. I have a ton of silica packs in there. I've noticed from time to time moisture on the outside of the barrel. Although, if I open it and run my hands through the pennies they appear to be dry. I worry about whats going on at the bottom of the barrel. Any thoughts or suggestions? Other than taking them all out for inspection? Considering converting to bags and storing indoors.

ammo cans are the best cent storage period. you can carry them in a hurry. and also canvas coin bags are good too. If needed they can be used like sandbags in case of flooding or if you need to build a barricade such as a place to defend from. they are nice to use as a rifle rest. If sh*t ever hits the fan, I am building a fortress on my roof using bags of pennies so I can keep watch over the neighborhood. to change the subject a bit, I have been considering gluing pennies, and nickels to the interior walls of my house with military grade epoxy (the kind they use in basements when they fix your foundation; the black stuff), it is stronger than steel. I am going to layer them 10 or so deep, I will have bulletproof walls. :shh: 8-)

Just sell the pennies to highroller for 1.35x face and buy silver - much easier to store ;)
