Brinks is sorting copper

Postby DEKAN » Tue Jan 24, 2012 8:46 am

The last ten boxes I picked up from five different banks have been mostly zinc boxes. Seven of the ten had no copper. All were Brinks wrapped. I am in the Orlando area. Is anyone else finding this?

Yes, there is a long thread on this. They have turned on the sorting mechanism on their "super sorter" to fulfill a contract for $5M in copper pennies. (I think I picked up a couple of your dumps at a couple of non-Brinks banks - have you dumped any of those boxes at Regions and MFCU? If not you, then someone else in our area.) :(

I'm not seeing any problems at non-Brinks banks, yet. So I'm avoiding SunTrust and BofA (here), except for CWR.

Rich,
Do you think they would sort in orlando for the NC guy? I know 5M is alot but over 2 yrs, I'm sure that could pull that out of a large metropolitan area .

There are 10 Brinks branches in Florida, one in Orlando, but I don't know where Brinks does their FL coin processing. Given the size of the state you might expect they would do sorting here locally in Florida (coin is HEAVY), rather than ship up to GA or the Carolinas and then back, but I'm not sure. Regardless of if they have a sorter turned on here, some copper-free boxes are making their way here. If they are trying to meet a certain time schedule and the Carolinas don't produce enough coin on their own they may have enlisted several coin centers to create the order, rather than just the Carolina area.

Sigh... :)

I was hoping someone else would do the work, but I went and searched for it. The original thread was here

and there were several subsequent smaller related threads, such as

Thanks 68, guess my search didnt go deep enough...

I was planning on building my own sorter to upgrade from hand sorting but I sed this could affect my district. I havent done cents in about 3 months so I havent seen any effects but I will keep my eye out. Thanks again.

The governement has been sorting in Canada on a large scale for .999% nickel for several years now.
They managed to drop the nickel population from about 20-25% in late 2008 down to 5% in late 2011.
They seem to be ignoring copper for now, but suspect they will target copper when the nickel population drops below 1%.

Since governments like Canada are sorting, and since the cat's out of the bag (to some extent anyway) on copper sorting in the US, and since the treasury is already investigating and planning new metal composition for pennies and nickels, how is it that the US government is not also already sorting in a large scale? Can't figure why they would let people like us make any money on this.

Have the same problem here in Ocala,I have stopped getting brinks boxes because of this and going with cwr's and string boxes. It's getting harder and harder to find copper's here in N. Central FL.

I agree but Brinks is the major supplier of coin in this area. There is only so much cwr and so is what someone else is dumping.
