How I made $10 from one 1943 steel penny

Postby ed_vantage17 » Sun Feb 05, 2012 4:39 pm

No not a scam. A guy at work has these "super scissors" that he claimed could cut a penny in half. I made a $10 bet that he couldn't cut a penny I brought him if he gave me a day to get it from home. He agreed and the next day I gave him a 43 steel to chop up. He was able to get about 1/8th of an inch into it and then it just stopped. The scissors held up but he didn't have the leverage to chop the steel. $10 for me!

Nice. So what if you ruined a steel cent.

What was his reaction?

When I brought it in he looked at it for a minute. I explained what it was and he asked if I was sure if I wanted him to destroy it. When I told him it was only worth 10 or 15 cents he just shrugged and had at it.

Still, haha, you did kind of scam him knowing more about the penny, but what the heck he thought he could do it, and an extra ten bucks is nice. I thought I saw this thing on late night TV one time.

Likely a steel Canadian would do the same thing. Funny story.
The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore all progress depends on the unreasonable man.” – George Bernard Shaw.

Quite a clever bet. I like it. Making a 1943 worth $10, brilliant! :)
