started to look for some error coins

Postby John_doe » Thu Feb 23, 2012 7:47 pm

I have always stacked coins, and also I have kept key dates/wheats/buffalos etc., but I was looking to start looking for some error coins to add into the collection. Mostly just looking for DD's and wide am's. Any helpful advice, to use while picking?

Hi John,

Here is my list of basic zinc dates to look for:

1998-2000 - Wide AMs
1995, 1995 D - DDO
1984 - DDO

Least favorite zinc dates to look for (never found these):

1983 - DDR
1992 D - Close AM

-------------------------------------------------------

Copper cents:

These are probably the essentials for me at this point:

1972 - DDO (all varieties & conditions)
1955 - DDO

Other coins to check for errors, varieties, etc.

1956D
1957, 1957D (check out coppercoins.com, lincolncentresource.com, b/c most of this decade produced something)
1964 - DDR
1969 S - DDO
1970 S - DDO
1960, 1960 D
1962, 1962 D
1968 S - DDO

Coppercoins.com will show you the rate that their errors can be found (1 most common - 5 extremely rare). From there you get to choose what you like. Also consider that the coin needs to be in good shape to display the error.

I have have a roll of minor variety 1972 DDO's but many are not in great shape so they may not carry a premium at this point.

Good luck and hopefully you get some finds!
