What do you do with United States NICKELS?

Search them for war nickels and other possible numismatic finds, then return the rest.

Canadian, I keep all US nickels and of course all CDN pure nickels.

Iron core (2% nickel) all immediately go back, but the 25% Canadians I will store - unless a bank specifically states that they are starting to run low on nickels (which hasn't happened very often) in which case I will cycle back a few Canadian cupronickels into circulation.

U do realise there not made of nickel anymore right? Scrap wise the worthless so ur average nickel is always gonna be 5c

nickles are still made of nickle and within in 5 years will go the way of the penny in 1980 where the metal will be worth more then the coin comp. has been the same except for 3 years during ww2 where they were silver
comp is copper nickle has been for over 100 years

It turns out that my boss found a 2009 nickel on the floor and said "I thought you said these were hard to find" I knew that they should be somewhat common...but it's my FIRST 2009p that will go into my coin folder. I'll be on the look out for more!

US nickels are 75% copper & 25% Nickel and weigh 5 grams. You should keep them all as they are worth more than 5 cents.
Canadian Nickels:
1955-1981 4.54 grams 99.9% Nickel
1982-1999 4.54 grams 75%copper & 25% Nickel
2000- current 3.95 grams 94.5% steel, 3.5% copper,2% Nickel
I am intrigued that the US, which doesn't use the metric system has a nice even 5 gram weight of the nickel, while the Canadians used 4.54 grams so that 100 nickels would weigh a pound.
I think the US will change to the Canadian composition in the next year or so.

I have never really seen the point of stacking 75/25 metal when you could put the same amount of money into pure gold, pure silver, or nearly pure (95-97%) copper. But the appeal of nickels I guess is that its impossible to lose money on them. It certainly beats earning an insulting 0.25% on a savings account.

Yeah, I don't stack nickel for the same reason. But I totally understand why people do, which is why I posed the question/poll in the first place. Makes sense to me to stack them now, and sort them later when the supply dries up. Maybe find the war nicks, the buffs and so on... But I wouldn't want to stack so many I didn't have funds available to buy precious metals. Or enough to get a few bags to mine for copper.

My original response to this poll was "Buy them and stack them". I have two unopened boxes that I set aside without sorting. Why waste time on boxes of nickels when I'm so busy sorting boxes of cents looking for copper? Today I sorted a few CWRs of nickels and I found a silver war nickel. Now those unopened boxes are looking tempting to me. The silver bug has struck.

Once the silver bug bites you....there is no hope! The copper bug is quite formidable as well.
