The Canadian penny news has lit a fire under my arse!

Postby Cu Penny Hoarder » Sun Apr 01, 2012 6:28 pm

For the past few months I've been sorting, but at a nice laid-back pace. The Canadian announcement has re-energized me to acquire as much Cu pennies that I can. I think the same thing will happen in the US very soon.

Starting early tomorrow morning I'm going to hit every bank possible to get as many boxes as I can get. I'm steping up my sorting/hoarding to a new level this week.

It has made me think about it as well. I'll probably get more boxes with each order from here on out....hopefully I can keep up with the sorting!

Got a little pep in my step here too...hoping to stockpile as many mixed pennies as possible, and then sort when time allows.

As a hand sorter, I have slowly gotten behind in sorting. I have about $1000 waiting to be sorted. I was starting to think about cancelling one or two of my weekly pickup banks. Not any more...

What happens to the zinc pennies you are left with, when the penny stops being taken by businesses (send to the USA). We need to keep an eye on things in the US because this is our future.

If you run a magnet and catch the few years of steel pennies, your percentages of coppers and zincs goes up very nicely.

I'll be pushing the "steelies" back to the banks while its still relatively easy, and keeping the rest.

Zinc isn't all that bad, its not quite a penny worth *yet*

Now is definitely the time to hoard as much as you can, and sort later.

Five major bank accounts = 3k Fv a month sorting. I hope to have to have 3000 lbs in 6 months. :)

I hit 15 branches today... made off with 20 boxes total. Unfortuntely, I got skunked with 5 boxes of brand new 2012P's (4 from Loomis, 1 from Garda). The 2012's are getting more plentiful and are showing up a lot more often. I'm still not sure if I should keep them, or sell them on Feebay. This is the first time I got skunked with multiple boxes of zincs.

Anyway, I sorted 6 of those 20 boxes today. Averaging 20-25% coppers.

After I was done with my pickups, I dumped a small amount at the penny arcade. I got a very pleasant surprise when I jiggled the plastic reject chute and about 5 quarters fell into my hand including a 1943! :) That really made my day.

I haven't seen any 2012's yet in my area. I'll be on the look out for them.

The timeline seems to be fall to stop circulation in Canada.

Although I greatly prefer sorting nickels, it will be a sad day when I can no longer get a box or bundle of pennies to sort through. I will at the very least stock up on a few boxes now to sort the winter season of 2012/2013.
