Need some insight from the Morgan experts

Postby Bluegill » Fri May 11, 2012 5:07 pm

What is the real world value of a 1882 CC Morgan? Specifically one of these GSA issues?

The seller says he has all the paperwork. He is asking $225. His price seems to be a skosh high from what I found poking around the internet. But I would like to get some insight from the Morgan experts on this forum. Other than their MV, I know basically nothing when it comes to Morgans.

Thanks in advance.

depends on the exact grading;
High for less than ms63, about par for ms64, low for an ms65.
If it's a REALLY clean looking coin (no scratches and dings) it's a really good price.
If any scratches, not so.

Most of the the GSA dollars have already been looked at by coin dealers and most that warrant a third party grade have already gotten one... that leaves the vast majority of GSA dollars to be on the lower end of the market spectrum. They certainly do sell, and sell well, but at $225, you would do better by getting a certified one by NGC

I sold a bunch of these CC Morgan here a couple of weeks ago for $180 shipped. $225 is high IMO. GainesvilleCoins has/had them for $195+shipping some time ago.

Most of these GSA Morgans are decent grade, agree. But there is very little price difference between a MS60 - MS64. Your aim should be to get these at or below the MS60 price because TPG comes at a price.

Regardless, they are beautiful coins. But not $225 beautiful :D

Edit: I am not an expert. I go to Doc for that.
