I have no idea on what its worth, but I have never gotten anything even remotely like that before. I have read on this forum that others have even found blank ones before tho.
Good find tho, at least to my eyes!

That is an extreme broadstrike.
If I have the gift of prophesy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to move mountains but do not have love I am nothing. And if I give all my possessions to feed the poor, and if I surrender my body to be burned but do not have love it profits me nothing.

I'm sure the coin shop was completely up-front about the value. lol

The value is what someone will pay. You may very well have a one of a kind.

On the front of the coin, it shows 'li' of the word 'liberty.' On the other side of the coin, it shows 'uniti' of the word 'united.'

Really, seriously, here is a discussion forum, the premier group of penny sorters. Millions of pennies have been sorted through by RCer's. Has anyone seen one like this?

3 bucks

I'fe found at least 6 blank planchets but I've never found anything that far off center.

I found one on ebay that is pretty close for $8.50... http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=380283529742&item=380283529742

I have one with just "OD WE" showing. I didn't find it sorting though. Probably worth about $6 or $8 retail so a coin shop offering $3 or $4 doesn't sound unusual. Having a date would be a lot better but finding something like that is really cool.

Maybe Abe, here on the forum, can chime in. He seems to know a bit about errors and possible prices.

Congrats to Franklin for finding such an awesome error!!! That is really cool.

Should I assume that it was found in a BWR?

Continued success to your son and to all of us. This is a great hobby.

Enjoy your coin searches, everyone. :geek:

Yes BWR as Franklin like to say shotgun rolls. Franklin did not talk until he was 4 1/2 years. When he found it he yelled planchet as he has found two this year. When I saw it I yelled mint error!

Very cool. These are always fun to find. They really aren't are rare as one might thing though. I would say $5 is in the right price range for what it is worth. Pennies are the most common coin to have mint errors.

I have one of those. Got it from my father who found it years ago. Typically they are valued around 3-5 dollars.
