Calculating the weight for face value

Postby Derek.Sheriff » Mon Jun 18, 2012 2:57 pm

I'm trying to figure out how much 5850 coppers would weigh. Does anyone know of a simple online calculator out there? Thanks!

36.45lbs
each copper 3.1g

5850*3.1 = 18135 g

18135/31.1

583.12 oz/ 16oz =36.45lb

derek, rsk is using troy ounces. so for regular pounds, it would be 40.47 pounds.

or

18,135 grams divided by 1000 = 18.135 kilograms

18.135 kgs multiplied by 2.20462 = 39.98 lbs.

2.20462 is the conversion factor for US lbs into metric weight and vice versa.

40.11 pounds

5850 pennies x 3.11 grams/penny= 18,193.5 grams

18,193.5 grams divided by 28.349 grams per ounce = 641.769 ounces

641.769 ounces divided by 16 ounces per pound = 40.11 pounds

there are 31.1 grams per troy ounce

copper is measured in avoirdupois pounds

gold and silver are measured in troy ounces

there are 12 troy ounces in one troy pound

100 pounds of copper cents would have a face value of $145.85 (that's why the answer differs slightly from above)

I'm assuming they are not BU so the calculation would be a little different. For estimation purposes I use 150 coins per pound or 300,000 per ton. Based on that estimate 5850 coppers would weigh about 39 lbs. If you need an exact weight I could rip off that many on the high speed counter and put them on the scale for you.

While I have a pretty good hoard of BU coppers.. which is what the coinflation calculater #'s are for.. I think the bulk of most of our hoards are circulated.. which weigh a little less.. giving you more face value per pound.
