Weight puts it as a 2 1/2 http://www.usacoinbook.com/coins/gold-2 ... onet-head/

It is well worn like it is old, not a newer copy. Looks Like I may have to take a trip to the LCS in the morning. If he is open.

1861 would be a real common year.... looks like 1.2 million minted for 1861....WOW! that's like penny #'s.

It just looks like it says FIVE not 2 1/2 to me. Hope it is!

SO TELL US THE STORY!!!! How did you come across it?

The diameter is too big for 2.5, and it doesn't weigh enough to be a 5. I think you have some kind of replica.

I would guess that it is a counterfeit $5.00 gold coin of the period. It was probably made from coin silver to give it weight and then maybe plated. The plating has since mostly worn off. Being coin silver would be why it weighs half the weight of an actual gold coin.

After looking at it more it looks like a FIVE D

It would have to be worn halfway to weigh that little

My wife wanted to look at used Jewelery, so I checked with my guy and he had coin and other. we went down and picked up all the coin and this was in the bag, thought it was just a dime till I got to looking close. He had two Half dimes, but did not let me get them. got the coin for .60 a gram and the .925 at .50 per gram. Had to take two christmass rounds also.

Went to the LCS and he offered me 6k for the coin.

No, he thought it was a copy also. Looks like it is worth the silver, if it is silver.

If it were a copy, I would think it would not be so worn? And as others have mentioned, there doesn't seem to be 'copy' on it. You have a trusted LCD in your area who could give you a 'free' professional opinion. The photos aren't bad but a bit blurry so its hard to tell. The color seems weak for gold in your photos, but I am very, very far from a 'gold coin' expert! (I'm pretty far from any kind of expert  )

Now let's see ... where is that blasted cat! I'm hungry. woof, whine, drool, sniff ... 'here kitty, kitty, kitty, nice kitty. Where are you little kitty?

Official minted weight is 8.359 so if it weighs 4 grams its a fake....bummer... Like mentioned above looks like a 5 dollar gold piece but unless your scale is broke it's not gold...

Hi there-

Do a very thorough acid test?? Though if the weight is off by that much, big red flag..
