I found an 1871 Seated liberty dime.......

Postby CardsNCoins » Sun Aug 19, 2012 1:13 pm

....in my own dump bag.

Yesterday I was at my dump bank getting rid of some dimes, and halfway through I noticed a few of my coins in the reject tray. This isn't TD, so I know they were not there before I got there, as this machine spits rejects out into a clearly viewable reject tray.

I grabbed the rejected dimes, and saw one was silver right away. With only seeing the reverse, I figured I just found my first Barber dime, but when I turned it over it was really cool to see that it was an 1871 seated liberty. Obviously it's been cleaned (heavily), but who cares. It's in real nice shape with full liberty showing. The first picture is front and back from my scanner, and the 2nd picture is the front taken through my 10X loupe.

That's really cool! Do you hand sort the dimes, or use a Ryedale? I was wondering how you missed it. Either way, I'm glad you caught it. Congratulations on a really nice find.

I use my Ryedale. It misses some of the earlier and/or slicker coins, but catches all Roosies and just about all Mercs. For the volume I do in dimes (20 boxes yesterday), it's a trade off I can live with.
