Would a real silver dollar ever not "ring"?

Postby aaa30040 » Thu Jan 31, 2013 8:30 am

I have a 1921 Morgan that is the correct size, correct weight and is not magnetic. However when I try to get that pretty silver ringing sound, I just get a thud. Is there any reason a real dollar would not ring or is it a fake?

Could it be a lead counterfeit? what does it weigh?

Sounds fake, literally. As suggested, weigh it...

does it have pitting or sand casting marks, or filing marks? If so, it is fake.

I read somewhere that as the silver ages, it crystalizes and looses the ringing sound????

I never heard of aged silver crystalizing. I have heard of an aged crystal wearing hippy losing their singing voice though.

Siler does crystalize when it ages but we are talking about Roman era coins for that to happen.

not only that, but in addition to being 2000 years old, it would have to be in the right surroundings, such as soil, sand, moisture, seawater, etc. I have silver roman coins in mint perfect condition.

Sometimes you get what's called a "dumb blank". It's a planchet with an internal lamination from a gas bubble in the metal when it was rolled out to the proper thickness. Those will not ring properly.

also if it is cracked through, it shouldnt ring, or if it has any lead melted onto it anywhere, it could make a thud.

Maybe it's hollowed out and packed with cocaine.
If I have the gift of prophesy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to move mountains but do not have love I am nothing. And if I give all my possessions to feed the poor, and if I surrender my body to be burned but do not have love it profits me nothing.

If it turms out to be lead, Stamp "BAD" into it, and send it to Pretty Penny. He has a WL half in the same condition.

Does it have a piece of sound deading material stuck to it? That would be obvious. Like riding around with the sunroof open in the rain and wondering why you were getting wet.
