Show me the ugly (pennies)!

Postby Zincanator » Thu Feb 14, 2013 5:41 pm

I was at the bank and the teller brought out an open box of CWRs. A bundle of those older solid red sleves caught my eye, I sometimes have luck with those. So I asked her for them all. I got home, cracked them open one after the other... all were nasty corroded, hardly recognizable. I think a maintenace worker musta emptied a fountain at the shopping mall or something.

Surely I'm not the only one who finds some remarkably disgusting pennies? Like the ones with chewed gum on them... or a pair sandwiched together by an unidentifyable sticky substance... or a roll with a bunch of pet or human hair that looks an awful lot like... um... oh that's just gross.

So who has the biggest pile of uglys here :D ?

The coin counter at my dump bank just won't take these for some reason. :?:

He He  I've got a few handfuls of those as well, for some reason no matter how many time you run them through the lobby counter they keep falling back into the reject tray :)

Ugg I hate the sticky stuff. Gross. What is it? I always hope it's just spilled pop, but in the back of my mind I know it's something far more sinister.

Interesting side note:

The mint pays $80/CTU for mangled zinc cents, but they'll buy your copper for $98/CTU.

Roll them back up into rolls and cash them in next time you are in Canada, all the banks here
take rolled coins and it's not like they'll be given back out now. ^_-

Just take it to one of the big 5 banks so it goes to the Canadian government, if you go to a
credit union I might end up with them. ^_-

That's very interesting... it has some very interesting implications on the amount of any given coin that actually exists vs. the mintage figure. I assume mostly banks use this, right? I can't imagine too many regular people have gotten together enough mutilated coins to send to the mint.

Also weird that a coin is "uncurrent" simply for being worn. I thought that term only applied to obsolete denominations (.20, .005, 2.50) and possibly things like IH pennies and Buffalo Nickels...
267,500 pennies and 186,000 nickels searched. Hand sorter.

I'm surprised they can get away with paying below face.. I thought they replace bad pennies one for one. Why would anybody incur the cost to ship them to the mint and then accept less than face value when they could just return them to the bank or spend them?

Pretty sure you can't call it a CTU if it is mangled zinc cents. Wouldn't that be a MZTU?

2) Where do I redeem Uncurrent coins?
You should contact your bank to redeem uncurrent coins at face value. (This includes
silver coins).

I know why you want the (nicely discounted) copper but what do you plan to do
with mangled Zinc? Hammer them back into disc shape one by one so somebody
will say "good enough"? :D
