Honda Civics can hold way more than that. Honda's a miracle worker, I've never had any trouble with it. I've had a 55 gallon container in the backseat, and two 18 gallon containers in the trunk. The car will be only a few inches above the ground, and I go real slow, but my car never showed any lasting effect from it, even after a 5 hour trip from Atlanta to move my copper hoard once. I've only had my car loaded up with that kind of massive weight twice before, and only once on a long trip. A pharmacist friend more knowledgeable about cars than me tells me I'll mess the suspension up quick if I did that with any regularity, so I've only done it to sparingly to move a hoard or make a sell.

EDIT: Okay, having never before researched the dangers of overloading a car, or even considered it, yeah I should not have done that. Won't put that much weight on it again.

It wasn't that bad actually, if you carry two 34 pound bags at a time you can move $100 from the house to the car quickly enough. Here's a picture of the penny bags during loading up, just carry two at at a time.

Well, let's hope you didn't short the preppers like you do the banks - they might not take too kindly to that.

I drove 300 miles with 1020 pounds of coppers in my Olds Alero 6 cylinder and there is no possible way it would have handled double that! I don't think it would have handled 1200 pounds. It was a scary trip home.

The Dodge Caravan is way underrated... We have a 2010 Chrysler Town and Country with the stow and go seating. Fold em down and head to Sam's Club to load up... One time I picked up 800# of popcorn, 8 - 36 pack canned pepsi products, 32 gallon containers of dill pickles, 5000 small brown paper to go bags, 10 big rolls of aluminum foil, 4 flats (24 gallon cans) of peaches, 6 - 35# jugs of fryer oil, 3 - 70# cases of ribeye, and 4 - 60# cases of baby back ribs.... Didn't break any speed records coming home but we made it.

Now if we need to get popcorn we DO take a trailer or just take the Excursion...

Maybe the story is BS, but I have had a drum in the back seat of a car. A drum of oil is typically 400 pounds so not any different than 2 big people in the back seat. 55 gallon drums are heavy and awkward, but with a little practice you can really whip them around. I can roll one on edge along side me as I am walking at full speed. If it is a lighter material (alcohol, light solvents) I can get one up into a truck alone without hurting myself. The easiest way to get one out of a truck is with a tire on the ground. Our business here deals with loads of drums. We always get a laugh when new guys start out and can't more them around, but after a couple weeks they make it look effortless.

Also, I see Civics overloaded all the time and they seem to perform quite well. They'll hold at least 8 undocumented workers if you stack them correctly. The most weight I have ever had in a civic was a few years back where I loaded 1/2 ton of wood pellets into one and I was pretty scared that something was going to break. The car was not happy. Don't know how it would handle a ton. Honda's are awesome though.

Ecotic wrote:So lately I had been researching the whole survivalist subculture after watching The Walking Dead and Doomsday Preppers on t.v. Anyway I found a local meetup group whose advertisement said you can barter/sell any survivalist gear you want at the meeting. I figured these guys had to be stockpiling gold and silver out the ass, so I go to the meeting with 2,000+ pounds of pennies in my Honda Civic 2007 (it was like barely off the ground when it was fully loaded, but it's hauled that much before). I just have to say that these guys were truly crazy, they weren't so much preparing for the apocalypse as much as they wanted it to happen. I spent two hours listening to strategies like how to fortify my bug-out location and install solar panels on my roof. I seemed to gather they figured they'd be Gods among men after "SHTF" (their acronym for doomsay) and them being the only ones prepared.

So anyway, my penny bullion was very popular. These guys were happy to exchange what they saw as worthless fiat money for intrinsic value. More than one was like 'Oh hell yeah, I can melt this **** after SHTF and I'll be able to fashion any tools I need!". I was like "Hey yeah man, you can make a good zombie headknocker I'm sure." I sold at what was viewed by them as a bargain 'below spot' $3.20 a pound or so. One guy paid me in gold, lol. 4 Swiss Francs, dated 1930, 1935, 1935, and 1947. I had to hide my excitement, I was like "Oh, well I guess I can take gold. It is little low right now after all, but alright."

You guys in the big cities, find you a group!

Yep. More like 1750 or so....since it's about 3/4 of the amount!

But don't worry....they won't notice! If they do...he will get a correction later.

Well, I am going to go waaaaaaay out on a limb here.

I don't see how this thread is a big deal. He sold a pound of copper pennies for $3.00. That is roughly 2x face. That is hardly worth the effort when you consider all the time, gas, wear & tear on your ryedale, etc. That is a slim margin in my book.

Overloading a Honda? I have never owned a Honda. In my youth, I would overload the $hit out of Chevy half-ton pickups. Beefing up the leaf springs and replacing blown shocks became common for me. I would routinely load a ton or more on those old Chevys. (Side note, I now know better, and drive better trucks. )

Selling $6,000 worth of pennies at a meeting? Hell, he better at that slim rate of return on investment!

Far fetched? Maybe. Maybe not.

As to other threads by Ecotic, I have to pass on that.
When I die, I want to go like Grandpa did. He died in his sleep..... Not screaming and hollering like all the passengers in his car.

There are many who sell for much less. I believe the most common price is about 1.4x face, right? I'm a hand sorter and I would consider selling at 2x face. Then again I don't pay for gas, so...
267,500 pennies and 186,000 nickels searched. Hand sorter.
