1909 questions

Postby Bucketgirl » Tue Mar 12, 2013 11:08 pm

SO I was relaxing, sorting my 3rd box on my own... and I find a pretty 1909. Good detail. Please educate the newbie... is this something to smile sheepishly and not say anything about and continue on sorting.... OR do I have reason to do the happy dance and speed dial my boyfriend and rub it in?

Hm, well I can't see any reason to be sheepish about it :P

I'd say it's quite a good find. Without an S or a VDB I don't think it's really rare or valuable, but considering I haven't found one after searching over 200,000 pennies, I think it's fair to say they're quite rare in circulation! May as well tell him about it.
267,500 pennies and 186,000 nickels searched. Hand sorter.

Get yourself a Whitman folder and start playing bingo.

Welcome to the forum! Go to the Tracking Thread and join the exclusive 1909 Club.
This may give you an idea of the rarity of your find. You could also post this in the pre-1940 thread.
There'll be time enough for counting when the sorting's done

It's your fault it was there in the first place! First I was just thinking of hole fillers...and after reading your comment, all I could think of was filling holes.

Either way, do a happy dance. :D

Talk about beginners luck. Finding an 09 after just 3 boxes. I have only found a couple of those after searching millions of pennies.

Is there an S on the front or a VDB on the bottom of the back of the coin?

Congratulations on a great find.

Do the happy dance all the way down tot he bank and get some more pennies to sort. A lot of times older pennies.. even 1909-S VDB (Very Dark Brown) get released into the wild either for National Coin Week in April or prior to a big ANA convention in your area. They could remain in circulation for years before being found.
If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more

No 'S' or 'VDB' on back... but its pretty cool... an update: i did tell the boyfriend of my find, and he likes to point out that it was "his" box of pennies, and likes to joke around that it should have been him to find it... I point out that he left them here and instructed me to sort them, count them, roll them and deposit them  KARMA was smiling on me... LOL also it helps us stay connected over the hundreds of miles that we are apart
