Boardsort or cashforcomputerscrap?

Postby messymessy » Sun Jun 09, 2013 10:34 am

A friend has 20 to 25 pounds of hard drive boards to sell. No one buys e-waste locally, so I'm thinking we should mail them off. Would you use Boardsort.com or cashforcomputerscrap.com? Perhaps somewhere else?

Does anyone know what to do with non-computer boards? I obviously strip off the electric motors, aluminum heat-sinks, and wires, but there's still a lot of weight there that currently is just junk to me. The yards around here do not take them. You can mix them in with dirty steel for 10/cents a pound but that is terrible.

I've got a box headed to cashforcomputerscrap today.

Boardsort took 5 days to give me a quote, but they do pay first.

cashforcomputerscrap sent me a fed-ex label based on total weight.

My box weighs 30lbs.

I haven't used cashforcomputerscrap so I can't comment on them. I used Boardsort a couple years ago and it was smooth sailing. I contacted them again to evaluate a potential deal earlier this year. The deal didn't work out for other reasons but Boardsort was responsive.

There's a place in Columbus (Ohio) that buys them, but they only pay $.14 a pound.

I have not used either of the companies mentioned here. Their prices for boards are good for small companies or individuals, especially if you can sell to them locally. However, I can beat most of their prices on CPUs if anyone here has a decent quantity.

Most brown boards found in TVs, VCRs, and stereos are considered "low grade". Typical e-scrap dealers will pay $0.15/lb for them. I buy them locally for this price but only as a courtesy to help other dealers get rid of them. The best price I've gotten for mine this year was $0.22/lb when copper was at its highest, and I sell several thousand pounds of boards and other e-scrap at a time. Right now I get $0.20/lb.

In theory they should be worth more because of the copper, aluminum, lead, and tin content. However, they're very labor intensive and expensive to deal with because they're bulky and need to be baled to get any weight on a truck. They're also a very energy-intensive material to process.

About the only thing good about low grade boards is they're already such a dirty and low value item that contamination is almost a non-issue.

A place by me is paying .15 a pound for low grade boards. I have not taken any down yet, but will soon...

Yes, it's a bad day for e-scrap dealers.

Any one know if either of these board buyers pay for amounts under a pound? Example: say I had 10 pounds of motherboards but only 1/2 pound of drive boards.

It would seem the shipping would almost be more than the value of your boards.

Just a bad example on my part. I do have a lot more than 10 lbs. in a couple of categories of boards. I guess what I was asking is will they count the couple of types of boards that I have that are under a pound or am I wasting time on shipping those? E-mailed one of the companies the question, but didn't get a response.
