Green coffee beans cost less and keep pretty much forever. When roasted, they make the best, freshest coffee possible. Storing 20 jars of coffee in your preps for many years will result in low-grade poor coffee. Sure, desperate people will buy it, but they would really prefer the good stuff.

I go through about two jars per month and rotate. Also interested in the green coffee bean idea though.

Green coffee beans can be bought at any medium to large outfit that roasts coffee beans. I buy mine in Boise at one of the 3 roasters there. They can also be bought online. I pay $6.00 per pound for green beans. They do not need any special storage conditions. I keep mine in thick plastic bags. The imported burlap sacks of beans are 90 to 120 pounds, depending on origin. Buying in that quantity will lower your cost per pound.

There is a Roaster's magazine, "Roast". ( http://www.roastmagazine.com ) The last time I got beans in Boise I asked them for an old copy so I could read the ads for beans and equipment. There are ads from importers, so you could buy beans by the large sack.

I have a non-commercial counter top coffee roaster from Nesco. ( http://www.nesco.com/products/Kitchen-A ... ro-Series/ ) They don't last forever, I'm on my second one. It works very well for roasting up to a cup of beans at a time. Typically I will run the machine twice on roasting days to make 2 cups.

To make coffee I used to have a pump-style espresso maker. They are kinda expensive and don't last. Now I use a stove top stainless steel espresso maker. ( http://primulaproducts.com/coffeeware/s ... 6-cup.html ) I highly recommend this method for making coffee, it is really good. There are several maker of this kind of pot.

Some people use low-tech to roast. Popcorn air poppers, even paint stripping heat guns can be used. As long as the beans are in motion while being roasted at around 320F, anything will work.

As far as bean origin goes, I like a blend of beans, half from Africa, half from the Americas. They have different flavor profiles that taste great when mixed. Costa Rica, Honduras or Brazil mixes well with Yyirgacheffe Ethiopian , Kenya, or Uganda. Also Sumatra from Asia is real good.

I second the emotion, with a shout of ####!!! one more darn expensive thing to buy! lol

I thought my two cases of instant coffee would do me, but I guess a 90 lb bag of green Arabica, and a roaster are next.

dammit, Beavis!

Ditto that. Great info! Unfortunately the old lady says she ain't givin' up her Maxwell House 48 oz tubs from Sam's  and her percolater & drip coffee makers. She says the other stuff is too complicated, and it would distract her from yelling at the tv!! Well, at least she's not yellin' at me, ... yet!

In my original response I was just playing devil's advocate,
to make you think twice about your money and it's future.
But the question about where to park it, if not in PM's
really got me to consider other options.

I am very seriously consider a PV system for as much of my electrical as i can reasonably do.
here is a DIY 7000 watt system for $7600
http://sunelec.com/pv-systems/grid-tie- ... ystem.html
I am convinced that i could do a custom install and fit this properly on my roof.
It will produce over $100 of electricity every month, [that's at today's prices.]
I am retiring in a few years, and it sure would be nice not to get a electric bill.
selling 600 oz @ $16.67 would raise enouch cash for this.
silver would have to go up $.175 every month.
That's $2.10 every year. plus the increase in pwer co price.
I know just 1 event could trigger a 3x-4x or more increase in silver.
However if a big trigger event were to happen, I have to wonder how it would reflect in my power bill.
But a downturn in the world economy could easily mean silver @ $8.
Look at the loss of interest we have on RC's website with silver and copper down 20% in a year.
Where will the buyers be if they can't even keep their lights on?

I also have to admit that I have a "contrarian"? nature.
it has always been my nature to argue [politely discuss] all matters.
whether I agree with your position strongly or not at all.
My wife really hates that but, others i know seem to enjoy it.
and I can learn from whatever points are made in that discussion.

Here is the only advice I can give on bit coin. Are they not totally dependent on the internet? Are their creation not totally dependent on the internet? If the net goes down how will the bit coin work? Personally, I really don't know.

Perhaps it's just the Neo luddite in me talking but I prefer sound money in my pocket. It's still there when the net goes down. But, if the net is up it seems much easier to transfer bit coins out of the country. This is a perfect example of when the techknowledgey helps to make your life simpler and more efficient, the prerequisite for "good" techknowledgey.
