What did you scrap?

1140 lbs #1 steel @ $180/GT for $91.61

This was an industrial machine that I picked up for free and drove 10 miles to the scrapyard.

195 lbs THHN @ $1.50/lb for $292.50

I bought this partial roll of wire at a surplus outlet for $25. I'll be going back real soon!

I'm assuming the industrial machine was broken down into pieces otherwise I will never compete against you in a weight lifting competition!

I had help loading the machine at a loading dock. It was a few inches below the bed of the vehicle, but we were able to tip it in and push it the rest of the way with pry bars. Unloading the thing was a lot easier than loading it!

For small dense items like that roll of wire I can lift up to about 200 lbs off the ground and into my vehicle by myself. I can manage much heavier items if I can tip them or get one end up. There are occasionally times when I'm envious of those of you with those small, low to the ground pickup trucks.

try getting stuff up onto a 6 wheel dump body tail gate. I will say, that Im sure everyone in a reg pick up is envious of me at the yard when all i have to do is hit a button to unload.

Dump bodies are nice! If I did more with steel I'd go that route. Actually, I'd prefer a dump trailer to hold steel in and take to the yard as needed.

I've got a catalytic converter sitting in my back yard that I'd love to scrap, but I have to be able to prove (with a receipt or something like that) that I didn't steal it. I found it sitting on the ground next to a dumpster. It is obviously heavily used. Any idea how I can still scrap this? FYI- Because the pipe is so long, I think it came from a truck.

I have a legal registered business and I sold these to a yard I've dealt with for almost a decade, so no issues here. Find a different yard to sell it to, or find someone in your area who scraps cars. Usually people who scrap cars deal with core buyers who buy items like cats, rims and batteries in bulk. You can sell or trade it to them and they'll sell it to their core buyer.

If you have a working relationship with a yard they won't question what you bring them unless there's a specific state law or local ordinance about that particular item.

Are you saying the check was supposed to be sent in 2014? I think most scrap yards deal in cash unless you have a really big transaction.

I think Russ meant that this was his first scrap run since 2014. Some states require a check to be mailed for scrap purchases over a certain amount ($30, $50, $100). I think Oregon may require a check regardless of the amount.

Nate was correct Oregon requires check for Non ferrous Material.
Plus you need to fill out a transport slip to Identify Yourself if stopped by Weigh Master or Sheriff.
This due to Druggies Stealing Charged Electric wires and Dying or getting Hurt.

45% copper wire: 1 lb. @ .45 = .45

Catalytic converter: 1 @ $10.07 (only item that wasn't in dumpster referenced above- it was HARD to sell w/o papers and I had to saw it to fit it in my car)

TOTAL FOR BOTH LOADS = $198.00 (by far the most I've gotten in a single day)

It is about time I got some brass! This was from old silverplate serving plates. I thought it might be copper, but the guy took a grinder and removed some plating to find brass.

I just called them and owner said he buys them as shred, were they mad because the ends were in the containers? If so I need to dump a bunch of coffee, pringles, nut and other metal bottom cans that I have filled up with the ends
