That is a loaded question. It depends on how you look at things and the timetables you are using.

Let's start with copper. Copper is currently $2.59/lb. (per KitcoMetals). If you look at a chart going back about 2 1/2 years and about 4 1/2 years ago, it was basically at this same level. Yet over the last 5 years it has traded from roughly $1.98 to $3.25/lb. Another way you could look at it is that right now it is close to the midpoint between the 5 year high and low.

Aluminum over the past 5 years has traded from roughly 66 cents/lb. to $1.15/lb. Right now it is 80 cents, quite a bit closer to the low than the high.

The whole Chinese tariff situation is affecting metals prices and, frankly, it will be surprising to me if this gets resolved before next year's election. Without getting too involved in politics, it seems from what I hear/read that Chinese President Xi Jinping would like to see Trump lose, perhaps because he thinks he will do a better job negotiating with a Democrat. If that is the case, expect base metals (for the most part) to avoid meaningful moves up until this complicated situation gets resolved.

A possible exception in the base metal area is nickel, which is acting much better than many others (especially zinc).

If, instead of scrap items containing base metals, you said you were rounding up silver or gold to sell, I'd be more inclined to say you might want to hold off- as both of those items have acted a lot better recently.

Good luck with whatever you do. I wonder what others thing about base metals pricing...

This was a real letdown in my area this past weekend. I brought them:

2 1966 GM axles minus housing
10 steel tubes from my roll cage
2 intake manifolds
10-12 aluminum cans
A pile of wire

They paid me $5.54. I thought I'd be closer to $20!

California redemption recycling centers close hard to get your nickel or dime deposit back.

Wow- I wonder if someone is going to take their place or how this is going to play out. I remember seeing one of their places somewhere in the San Diego area about five years ago. They had a lot of people there and lots of activity.

I brought a few things in yesterday. A 50 or 100 ft. extension cord, a friend almost threw out, I got 3.54 for that thing. I brought in some bronze, about 7 dollars, and then some iron about 50 lb. @ 4 cents a lb. for about 13 dollars total. Same friend offered me allot of huge aluminum windows that were easy to take apart, not worth it, and I know they went to the landfill.

I'm under the impression that aluminum is no longer worth recycling. Over the last 9 years I have brought piles of aluminum in, lately I can barely get 20 cents a lb. for clean cast aluminum, it just doesn't add up either because it is so light, and work to get it clean. Apparently cans are worth it because I see people bringing those in. Interesting trivia, the melt value of an aluminum can is about equal to a copper penny right now.

I saw a house that was demolished yesterday and it was too dangerous, frankly, to walk through some of the stuff so I walked around the perimeter and got a few things...

But the funny part was that there was an alarm somewhere in one of the piles that kept going off. It didn't sound like a sleep alarm or burglar alarm. Maybe it was something like a refrigerator alarm with battery backup. There was no good way to sift through the pile and find it- too much stuff. I imagine that some of the neighbors will be pretty upset when they try to go to sleep. It was annoying for me to listen to it and I was only there a few minutes.

Five gallon pail of clean bright copper wire 20 pounds and around 5 small equipment motors. Netted $150.00 I'm thinking he messed up something but shut my mouth out the door. Thanks . I have not scrapped in a while and today I cleaned up what was laying around my yard. Win/win

Even 20# of bare bright copper plus 5 small motors isn't worth anywhere near $150. I'd have been ecstatic if I got just $50. Nice going.

Over a ton of tin. That's a LOT. We're gonna have to start calling you the Tin Man. And if you had a wife named Dorothy, that would be even better! (Wizard of Oz reference) :)

I think sometimes the wife wishes she could "click her heels" and the scrap "yard" would disappear!

Did you get a better price as you brought in over a ton? Out here they have started to pay a little more for "clean sheet iron" I don't break down my steel just separate it into different piles, sheet iron, unprepared, clean sheet iron and prepared.
