One place I’ve had some really good luck is McDonalds drive thrus, believe it or not. The only downside is that some of the coins are badly scratched from being driven over.

I'm a big drive thru checker and have had a few good scores (good score being a 3-5 coins at best). One problem is that drive thrus are so popular lately that there's barely a time when no cars are present. The McD's near me constantly has several vehicles backed up.

A funny pre-covid story: I was walking across a parking lot once and angled my path to check out a Dunkin Donuts drive thru. Sure enough, found a couple of coins below the payment window. As I walked away someone from inside slid the window open and said "Can I help you?" which is retail-ese for "WTF are you doing?" lol. Anyway, I ignored them, kept walking and when I eventually passed the speaker where people place their order, the voice from the window piped up again with an annoyed "Hey!". I laughed and kept going.

One of my regular stops had moved their vending machines (Coinstar included) away from the wall and I got a look at the under-the-machine potential. Looked like someone had already scooped up the bounty but I managed a nickel and a zincoln without drawing attention to the fact that I was back amidst the grime and wiring where I probably shouldn't have been.  Did I miss anything?

May wasn't the gangbusters rebound I was hoping for but I'm happy with the results. Still on a pace for $100/US for the year as long as I can keep each month over $5, and while foreigns slowed somewhat, tokens and other misc provided some nice discoveries. Apartment complex parking lot finds are at $1.20, fairly decent but lagging behind the penny-a-day average.

May total (2021 total)

What type of coin are you referring to? Do you mean a Barber quarter?

A gold coin in a CS machine. Wow- that takes the cake! Not even sure there is anywhere near a close second to that on this thread.

2021 HALF-YEAR TOTALS!

Things are looking mighty fine at the midway point of 2021. $100 in US seems like a slam dunk at this point. Foreigns will have to pick up some steam though to set a new record since last year at this time there were 24 countries...during a pandemic! Silver is still showing with regularity and parking lot finds in my apartment complex is up to $1.89, more than a penny a day. The only downside in this month was losing a Coinstar when a local Smith's closed. It drops my search "loop" to seven stores. Maybe another grocery chain will occupy it someday.

June total (2021 total)

1¢ - .79 (4.65)
5¢ - .65 (8.75)
10¢ - 3.40 (13.50)
25¢ - 3.50 (44.00)
50¢ - 1.00 (2.50)
$1 - 0.00 (1.00)
Total - 9.34 (74.40)

Included in June total - 1935-D, 1942-S wheaties; 1946-S, 1964 Roosies; 1968-D half

I spotted some rejected coins in the Coinstar machine at my credit union today while waiting in line for a teller. I scooped up a decent score.

Free money:
$3.25 quarters
$0.60 dimes
$0.30 nickels
$0.01 cent

For the collection:
1 - Canada 25 cents (1985)
1 - Singapore 10 cents (2009)
1 - US silver quarter (1964)

Did not hit Coinstars as often as I'd expected this month, resulting in (by my standards) less than stellar totals. Added a couple of new countries, a few interesting tokens and my first steelie in three years. Still on track to hit $100 in US if I can maintain $4.25 a month. Apartment complex parking lot finds nudged up a mere penny to $1.90.

July total (2021 total)

1¢ - .53 (5.18)
5¢ - .65 (9.40)
10¢ - .70 (14.20)
25¢ - 2.00 (46.00)
50¢ - .50 (3.00)
$1 - 0.00 (1.00)
Total - 4.38 (78.78)

Included in July's total - 1942, 1943-D wheaties

Belgium <--24th country for 2021
1 franc (1970)

Great Britain
1 penny (1993)
