Trade 40% for 90% or .999 ???

Postby Tommybee » Fri Mar 04, 2011 7:18 am

I have about 8 rolls of 40% Kennedy halves that I obtained at face value roll searching. I am undecided as to whether I should keep them, or sell them and buy some 90% junk or .999 rounds, etc.

Storage space is not an issue for me, so the only way I think making a switch makes sense is if I sell the 40% when silver is high, wait for a correction and then try to buy more 90% or .999. If there is no correction, then I can see no advantage from a bullion standpoint.

I have about 24 oz of silver in the 40%. I can probably get 3.50 a piece for them, or $560. If you figure I could buy at, say $36 oz today for junk or generic, that's 15.5 oz i could buy with the money I sold the 40% for. So I'd loose 8.5 oz of silver at today's prices.

I know 40% are less desireable and you can buy and sell them at a discount, but is it worth it to sell them for higher purity stuff if you can't buy that higher purity stuff at a significantly lower spot price? I don't know about you guys, but I expect $50 oz silver....soon.

Any thoughts appreciated. Thanks.

With silver currently at $34.50 per ounce (give or take), you are being ripped off by the person that is paying you only $3.50 per coin for 40% halves.

I'm only getting ripped off if I sell them to him. Nobody is holding a gun to my head. 40% trade at a discount. I'd only buy them if I can get them below spot. We'll see what his prices are this weekend. Maybe he's closer to $4.00 each with current silver prices.

What "CardsNCoins" is saying is that there are probably no less than 20 people here RIGHT NOW who would pay $4 each plus pay shipping. So even if he's at $4 that's still leaving very easy money on the table.

Yep, TB I would trade you at a rate of 3:1 face.

Boiled down that means I value your 40% Halves at $4.00 each and my 90% halves at $12.00 each.

or, 9.50:2 for ASEs

Thats 19 40% halves for 2 ASEs

Each pays own Shipping. What do you guys think?

In hindsight my first comment should read - "Anyone that is offering you $3.50 per coin is attempting to rip you off."

That being said....

Rolls of 20 coins on eBay are selling between $90 and $100, so that is $4.50 to $5 per coin, but obviously there are fees associated with eBay and paypal, so $4.00 or $4.25 per coin here where there are no fees is probably equitable.

Not trying to kill Doc's deal, but the best scenario is to find a local coin shop paying a fair price for them which is probably $4.25 to $4.50 per coin. Walk in, walk out, nothing to ship.

Good luck whichever way you decide to go.

Heck, you could probably put them on auction here and get close to 4.50, no fees. I know I'd pay up to 4.25+/-. So let's see here 160 x 4.25 = 680.00. I would do that in a heartbeat.
