I could foresee someone offering perhaps $500- $1,000- just to take a chance. You could get some quick $ w/o having the hassle of getting it certified.

By the way, I once had a potentially very valuable item. It was a copper nickel blank blanchet, so we know it was minted from 1856-64. I have never seen one anywhere else. Sadly, it was stolen along with lots of other coins I had in November, 2019.

The cops arrested a couple of people and got about 7% of my stuff back. Oh well…

This is terrible. I'm sorry you had to experience this. The closest I've come to something like this, was when I bought counterfeit silver bars. Luckily local city detectives and US Secret service were able to get me all my money back, https://www.realcent.org/viewtopic.php?f=64&t=31367. That was just about 10 years ago. Still wonder what happened to that guy. He actually sold or tried to sell fake coins and bars to a number of RCer's and BSer's in the New England area. Hence the attention from the US Secret Service. By far the craziest stress filled experience I've had with this hobby and was very very lucky that it ended okay. I'm sorry your experience wasn't this way too.

Really excited to see the outcome. I can only imagine the "kid on Christmas eve" anxiety you're experiencing.

For sure!

I also included a couple barber and 2021 dollar coins. So it will equally be an experience to see what those grade at versus what I'm thinking.

Posting a quick video update

This is something of a 10 minute rambling of how this coin was found, the plan to send it to PCGS, and all the luck surrounding its survival after being found. Spoiler don't store potentially valuable coins in a cardboard box in a location where water could reach it...

Concerning moisture, now you know to take precautions.

I vacuum seal quite a few things in half pint jars with desiccant packs. Although I have not done this with coins, it is a technique for controlling moisture you might consider.

It was awful and my wife basically was like nothing to worry about...but we had some water get into your hobby room. I didn't even realize after looking that the cardboard boxes with coins and currency were wet at first. This was after they cleaned up the water, so i wasn't looking closely.

Quick update

PCGS just billed and emailed me the grade is ready. Not sure if that indicates the coin was authenticated as a mint error, or just a really expensive 1983 zinc penny or other.
Going to let this one be a surprise when it arrives and I unbox the coin.

Feeling lots of vicarious excitement and anxiety!

I'd probably melt my wifi with how often I'd be checking the tracking online.

I think you can check the certification and pictures on the PCGS website or app right now before it is delivered.

I think you can too. But it's going to be fun to learn at the unboxing.

Big coingrats! It's the kind of luck that all collectors hope to have.

Amazing. So glad this rarity is in the hands of a Realcent'er. Well deserved.

Do we know how many similar coins have been certified?

I can't imagine there are many.

Hey thanks all.

Coindoods post has some links that suggest maybe around. 10 have been graded.

One fun note, since cross posting this, Ken Potter reached out to write an article about the find. Kind of a geek out moment for me.

Interestingly, PCGS doesn't even list it as one of the possible varieties for 1983, in order to be able to check population numbers for PCGS and NGC (Auction). At least not that I can see.
