I could foresee someone offering perhaps $500- $1,000- just to take a chance. You could get some quick $ w/o having the hassle of getting it certified.
By the way, I once had a potentially very valuable item. It was a copper nickel blank blanchet, so we know it was minted from 1856-64. I have never seen one anywhere else. Sadly, it was stolen along with lots of other coins I had in November, 2019.
The cops arrested a couple of people and got about 7% of my stuff back. Oh well…
This is terrible. I'm sorry you had to experience this. The closest I've come to something like this, was when I bought counterfeit silver bars. Luckily local city detectives and US Secret service were able to get me all my money back, https://www.realcent.org/viewtopic.php?f=64&t=31367. That was just about 10 years ago. Still wonder what happened to that guy. He actually sold or tried to sell fake coins and bars to a number of RCer's and BSer's in the New England area. Hence the attention from the US Secret Service. By far the craziest stress filled experience I've had with this hobby and was very very lucky that it ended okay. I'm sorry your experience wasn't this way too.
