What is an aluminum can worth?

Postby Number21 » Sun Apr 17, 2011 6:52 pm

Here in Oregon cans are always worth a nickel with the deposit, but I'm starting to wonder...what is the actual aluminum value of a can these days? Does anyone know?

I'm almost thinking about coming up with some sort of tool to cut the top and bottom off my cans before I return them for the deposit...the only thing the can return machine looks for is the bar code..:D

31.4 alum cans to a pound. Alum cans by me are .67 a pound so 2 cents each.

.....actually it's 34.35 cans per pound.....

....from the Aluminum Association (below), September 14, 2010.......

• "Today’s beverage can weighs only 0.466 ounces, more than 15 % lighter than in 1993.
Through engineering and technology advancements, the can continues to become lighter while delivering the same serving size and using fewer resources—a goal of any container. There are 34.35 aluminum beverages to a pound."

I've always used the CRV .05 deposit a can in california and for every pound you turn in you get $1.57 $1.57 / .05 = 31.4 + extra for the value of the alum!

Basically .01 here on the EC.

Tires are $200 each after getting a nail at the scrapyard.
