1959-D First year for Memorial reverse, check for wheat reverse.

I didn't even know a 1959 wheat reverse even existed. Has anyone seen a legit one of these? Maybe it is just me.

Also, should I be saving all the 1959's, since they are the first year memorials. Anyone getting a premium for these or suspect that there will be a collector demand in the future? I have a few full rolls of them that I just put in with my copper rolls. Wonder if I should dig them back up and set them aside?

Victor David Brenner is the guy who designed the wheat penny. His initials are located on the reverse(backside) of only the 1909 penny as the very bottom of the coin. Some 1909's have his initials...some dont.

I havent bothered to search for defects or rare dates/mints etc. It slows down my copper hunting!

In 1909 after just 3 days of printing, Charles Barber (Chief Engraver) was told that the initials were too big and to remove them. He was told to put a B on lincolns bust.. He did not want people to think he was the artist and refused. In 1917 after Barber died, the mint put the initials back on at the trunk of Lincolns bust. The no VDB could be a polished die type error or perhaps struck through grease so that the initials on the bust didn't show up.

Barry, sounds a lot like what I have been looking for from the information obtained in the book: Strike It Rich with Pocket Change, volumes 1 and 2

Don't know if there has ever been a 1959 with a wheat reverse, but it could be possible. The same could be possible to find a 1983 minted on a planchet from the 1981 or earlier composition.

And, they say it is possible to find a coin with a rotational error so I check every coin passing through my fingers for this type error even though I have yet to come even close to finding something like this.

Enjoy your coin searches, everyone. :geek:

There was a 1959 with a Wheat Reverse but only one has been found and the legitmacy of it has been questioned. If i recall correctly grading companies refused to grade it.

Not going to dig any of the penny books out of the library (Yes, I hoard coin books too), but the initials were restored in 1918 rather than 1917. They are really tiny and located at the bottom of Lincoln's shoulder. This is one of the first things you check when looking at a raw 1914-D. The no VDB varieties of the later cents are the coins where die polishing has removed the initials.

Thanks so much for the list, there were more than a few that I didnt know about. This will certainly come in handy.

Question: Is it worth the effort to set aside "S" minted pennies as they are found?
