Quarter Pound Copper Bar - Troy or AV?

Postby Kurr » Tue Sep 06, 2011 1:18 pm

I am weighing some copper to cast quarter pound ingots for resale.

31.10 * 3 = 93.30
or
28.34 * 4 = 113.36

I know copper is normaly Av. but that is because spot is for tons. Copper is in the same family on the periodic as Au and Ag, and this is for bullion, less than a kilo.

What do you say?

I have found that AVDP and troy are both widely used for 1 oz bars, but that more people seem to prefer AVDP for anything larger (myself included).

It shouldn't really matter, as long as you mark it.

And, there are no quarter pounders in France... It is the Burger Royale!

Ditto that. "As long as you mark it" Better yet, put the gram weight on it as well.

Yes that's great.

What kind of ton, anyhow? There's about 4 kinds, that I know of.

I'll let you know when I get ready to sell my first one ton lot, lol.

I got 6 barsdone playin around yesterday, learning the torch, learning the metal, etc. Casts came out well formed, most slightly under my goal, due to, well... it aint easy! I think my other style melting dishes would be easier to pour. I have no "pour spout" in this crucible, and pouring 2200 degree metal into a 4mm slit while maintaning heat and torch controll, I missed some.

At one point I thought I was going good, then I watched shiny liquid metal about readyto pour go to "slushy" liquid metal, then a hard something that looked like black styrofoam, and wouldn't budge, move, or melt. I kinda freaked out, thinking I ruined my dish. Added more of my super secret flux recipie, and did get it back down to pour half out in mold, then dissolved the rest out, maybe dissolved aint the right word. I used chemicals and fine carefully controlled heat to precipitate out the copper, poured the rest then liquified the solidified glass flux in the cop and poured into water, then reconditioned the cup, and filed a good lesson into the memory bank.

Now 6 bars from yesterday, went into the pickle last night to soak, and most look pretty good this morning. Just bought a new dremel, as my old one died after 5 years of good service. I'll get the wire wheels and engraving tools on em today and see how they come out.

Since I do not have a plain "A&M" logo stamp, these will probably be generic stamped.

Did I mention copper is the hottest, dirtiest, meanest metal I have played with yet? And you have to de-gas it!

More to follow as I get it done.

No, they aint as pretty at all. After I got a run of about 11 lbs started I learned a cruel fact.

I think I spent about 15-20 dollars in gas to melt 8-10 dollars worth of metal. I can do it, and it looks ok, put will not be feasible at this time for production runs with my current setup. Maybe I can roll it out into sheet and use it for jewelry manufature till I can get a different set of molds made up and rebuild my furnace to a different configuration.

Live and lean. Tuition. Gotta pay these dues.
