2001-s Kennedy half (silver)

Postby dan53 » Thu Sep 08, 2011 8:10 am

While sorting my halves yesterday I found a 2001-s kennedy (silver). Its definately silver and I am pretty sure its 90% silver. Does anyone know if they made any 40% 2001-s (silver)?

I don't think there were 40%. I assume the 2001-s is a proof. That's what the Red Book shows (90% silver proof).

Yup- think it was 1982 or 1983 when they stopped any production of 40% Silver and shifted back to 90%.

I found a 2004-S Silver proof once in circulation and it was 90%. As long as it has that silver band and look you scored well!

Gang, 40% halves were stopped in 1970 (except for the becintennial specials of 1975-76). In 1992 the Mint started releasing proof sets containing 90% silver versions of the dime, quarter and half-dollar. You found a 90% silver proof (you lucky dog). A good investment would be the 'Red Book' which gives the specs for every coin for every year minted. Cool book. Congrats on the find, and here's hoping you find more!

Thanks everyone. I have two red books......a 2009 and a 2012. I see where it says 2001s silver and on the bicentennial it says "silver clad" and that the silver clad contains 40% (.1479 oz) silver. So in the red book "silver clad" is 40% and "silver" is 90%. I'm straight now.
