The buyer at the yard informed me of a new policy - need a permit from where the metal was obtained in the case of the Al rollers and drums although he bought them from me this time. I explained that I was a tech and worked on those machines for a living. He said I could get some documentation from the company I work for. I'm sure the same is true for Cu and an effort to try to curb the thievery that is occuring at almost epidemic levels.

You don't need a permit for UBC's or steel.

Okay, I am a rookie at the scraping. Over the years I have hoarded aluminum cans that never made it to the yard, but yesterday I made my first drop and earned a cool $24.60.

I am looking for some expert advice: is it worthwhile to save up tin cans? the cans that food come in. Do yards take these cans?

My usual scrap yard buys them at the same price as any shreader steel, was 9¢/lb on my
last trip (Sept. 2 took in 140 Lbs. of steel). Only downside is these cans are a bit bulky
compared to their weight and they don't take to "stomping" like aluminum cans so I usually
only save them for the steel run if I'm filling them with smaller pieces of metal so it's not
a waste of space (in both storage and transport) or if I know I'm going to the scrap yard
in the next 2 to 3 weeks. Otherwsie I blue box it with the plastic and cardboard. If I had
a good way to flatten them I'd take them all in myself.

So if you take in other steel and can come up with a good way to flatten them (or go
fairly frequently with other steel anyways) they are worth taking in.

Hmmm? Maybe if I keep getting fatter they will eventually crush under my weight...

I use a 16 or 20 lb sledgehammer.... more like a plunger than a hammer. Here is a pic of my 7 yr old doing it on alum cans, but it works fine on tin cans too.
