What did you scrap?

I really appreciate your feedback! The tip you provided about the wire is invaluable, I will be on the look out with Christmas around the corner. I have to admit however, I am new to scrapping, and I couldn't tell you what a 110v or 220v wire is. Also, I saw a different post here on RC where someone stated the scrap yards would only take stripped wire, so I experimented with this, and found it to be a poor way to make money. I will have to see if my local yard takes unstripped wires. Man, I really appreciate the time it took to provide this valuable insight.

Ordinary 110 Volt or 220 Volt household appliance wire. (Lamp cords and stuff like that) Air conditioners and clothes dryers have the 220. 220 has three thick strands of copper wire. In some cases aluminum wire.

Christmas lights might not be worth processing. Maybe remove the bulbs throw them in a bucket. Don't walk by 5 Gallon buckets either. They are perfect for classifying your smaller scrap items

I've never heard of a scrapyard that will not buy insulated wire

I have already figured out the value of keeping buckets

Yep, it was someone here on RC that said some scrap yards take unstripped wires, and this person stripped the wires, so I thought I needed to strip the wires. But after a bloody thumb and not acquiring even a pound after an hour...well you know... I figured out it wasn't worth it. I will call my yard tomorrow to see if they take unstripped wire.

okay I called my local yard and got some good news I think. They will buy unstripped cords at 1.25 a pound and 2.80 a pound for stripped copper wire.

1.25 sounded good to me. I'm a rookie. I wonder what other folks are getting unstripped insulated wire?? Nonetheless I am stoked about 1.25/lb for unstripped

My last ticket with insulated was in April and was 1.25 then. I have gotten as much as 1.80 on it.

Cool beans. I am really happy about 1.25/lb for almost no work. 2.80/lb for stripped wire sounds good too but considering I am small time with no fancy machine, I will take the 1.25/lb now. Maybe by the time I fill up a 55 gal drum unstripped wire will be back up to 1.80/lb.

I had to go pick up a freezer that a friend was giving me today. I had to drive by the scrap yard so I figured that I shouldn't go empty. I loaded up about 500# of pure junk. At the yard, there were a couple of 5 foot livestock gates in real good condition and a partial roll of barb wire fence that was still on the roll. I asked the yard attendant if I could have them in trade for mine and he told ne he douldn't do that. I left my son to finish unloading and went inside and asked. They traded me even up pound for pound. .

I netted 460# at $.09 per pound, two $50 gates and $20-30 worth of barb wire. Oh and I almost forgot the free freezer that will soon be filled with venison.

HA! Adagirl, you have swerved into the ALL TIME scrappers arguement as a newb! WTG! Stripping or not stripping is THE scrapper arguement. I strip everything that is solid wire and almost everything over 12 gauge. That said, I am a salesman who spends hours driving and needs something to do with his hands - because my knees can steer just fine. So, I strip on the road and sometimes on the backporch when I want to relax. My wife looks at me like, "You're crazy" and I remind her that SHE married ME.
