Going through pennies I got from various locations over the weekend. One box was from N.F. Sting & Son. It starts out ok with first batch of rolls at 21% and gradually goes down to 2-3% by the time I got to the middle of the box so I go get the kitchen scale and weigh each of the last 16 rolls. All of them are 125, 126 or 127 grams. All zinc weighs 125 grams and I weighed one of the papers and it weighs about a gram so I figure that $8 may have about 3 coppers. I leave them rolled.
I moved on to the $15 I got from one of my other banks. That is all they would spare since they said a local fraternity had a charity event that collected pennies and wiped them out. Anyhow, I weigh them. All rolls are 133 to 141 grams. Full copper roll weighs 155 grams. They were running around 25% until I hit one batch of 4 rolls that had 38% copper including an 1890 indian head (about VG-8) and a 1920-D (G-4 to VG-8).
That was my first indian head find and I yelled when I slid out the coins and saw it. My kids came running. Pretty cool.
My normal percentage around here is 25%.
