Advice on finding a pick-up bank

Postby ember » Sat Jul 09, 2011 2:52 pm

Hi, everyone.
I am just curious as to how you go about finding a bank/branch that will order box/bags of Lincolns? I am a part of a smaller credit union. They will not order boxes for me since they don't have the room to store them, nor do they get much commercially deposit coins. I got them to order me a single box, but without being a business they already cut me off.

Do you just call each bank near you and ask if they can order? I thought it would be much harder to find a dump bank than one to order from.
Thanks.

It depends on where you are really. I have possible dump banks all over so I kiss up to the pick-up banks that help me instead.

I would say just check around, usually a major bank is more likely to be able to help you. I have more difficulty at credit unions as well. I've been using Chase and BofA as pick-up banks. I just opened an account with them and keep almost nothing in it because I don't like them but as far as giving me pennies it works well. Just pay and cash whenever you go.

I go to a couple banks, and all of them have no problem finding a box (or 25$ worth of rolls) for me every few days. I have accounts at BofA and Chase, and also visit some local banks that I don't have accounts at sometimes...

I would say to go to the teller with cash and just ask for a box...Keep trying until you find one that will, and then make an account there.

Im sure calling would work just as well, but its harder for them to reject you in person ;)

Identify the bank in your area with the most branches. Open a checking or savings account for $100.00. Now you are a bank customer.

Step 2, by trial and error you'll have to determine which of those are friendlies and which ones are not. The Nots become your dump locations.

I, too, have found credit unions unwilling to order coin, but they'll sell me all the customer wrapped rolls (cwr) I want, subject to availability and their own needs.

Good luck...welcome to the forum 8-)

As Morsecode stated, Credit Unions do not typically order coin. They are more likely to have to ship coin. I have an agreement at 6 branches with 3 different Credit Unions. I take everything, including the quarters, golden dollars, two dollar bills. I basically clean out the vault every week or two

They don't have to pay to ship out coin, they don't have to count it week after week, and they save anything they think is special for me. Despite current thinking that quarter rolls do not produce, I find silver almost every month in quarter CWR.

But Credit Unions and Banks may give you the bags out of the change machines. I would call the main office and ask about their coin policy. I asked mine straight up and I pickup bags from 3 different Credit Unions and 2 banks. Pennies, Nickles, Dimes, Qtrs, 50Cents.. anytime I want. I also have 1 Credit Union that is ordering, coins or bills..
Here is the difference in Credit Unions. Credit Unions don't have the business end, therefore they have to spread the cost of ordering coins across the members... Just ask and keep going to every branch.. Get to know the vault mgr..

Thanks for the advice, everyone.
I went to a local BOA after quite a few other banks. I asked to purchase a box of pennies. This BOA said no problem. They grabbed me a box and said that will be $25. No hassle with this branch.

I asked if they readily have stock on hand, and the teller told me that they do and it would be rare for them to be out of coin. He didn't realize I would be picking up as much as I can, though. I told him I am in search of a bank to supply me with coin, and if I found one, I would like to open an account with them. He asked if I was a business. I just told him I was starting a small numismatic business.

They all seem to have a lot of questions when you ask for coinage, especially boxes of cents.

This BOA also told me that they can order me half dollars, but they don't keep them on hand. So as much as I hate BOA, I may open an account to pick up from. I may reopen a Chase account to dump at, haha. But most likely I will just hold everything and head to a casino for their free coin counter.

I started picking copper out of my pocket change, but now I am going through everything for rare/mint errors, plus the copper. I have a 1970-s DDO I am sending to PCGS here soon, so that coin is what really got me wanting to go at it. I didn't find it myself, it was in with a bunch of other Lincolns my grandfather had sorted a long time ago. But he left me this little gem within the bunch.

My fiancee won't touch coins, so she is no help, haha. But I am already 3/4 of the way through my box hand sorting. Those paper rolls become a pita after a while. Found maybe 20 wheaties in the box and the oldest so far is 1925.

Lucky!

I just sorted a box today and found 6 wheats :(...

A decent amount of clean 2009's though, which I'm also stocking up on :D...

Tomorrow I hit up a local bank for nickels and halves, hopefully I'll have better luck there

Good luck!
It is a good way to keep myself occupied. Too hot to go outside, so I stayed in and sorted.
Have to edit my last post, just found a 1919-s
