Christmas lights

I just started driving a garbage truck and having been clipping cords off of small appliances and such for the last week and got about 40lbs, i I can probably get close to $1/lb for this, but in the last couple days I've gotten over 50lbs of christmas lights. Can I take these in and get a decent price or should i clip all the bulbs off? Has anyone here taken them in to the scrap yard?

Snip the bulbs and you should get the price for #2 insulated copper wire.

Near me they will pay a very low grade of wire for christmas lights. They usually pay by the pound at 15% copper spot price. Just call up your local yard and ask! Call around to a couple and see which one has the most competitive prices.

I can get #1 insulated price for them after the bulbs and plugs have been cut off. That's assuming the wire isn't plated, which it sometimes is.

It's not very productive to do this though, as the wire is light weight and the process is labor intensive, especially with newer lights. As mentioned, some yards will buy them intact for low grade wire.

I get #2 copper for them with the bulbs cut off.

Do you cut the whole socket off?

yes. one time i just broke off the bulbs and left the plastic sockets on and only got elect motor price for the wire
