How do I clean a coin?

Postby OtusLotus » Sat Dec 10, 2011 4:09 pm

Just found an 1965 3 Cent coin... only problem with it is that there is some green gum on the back of it.

What is the best way to get the gum off? Freezing?

Typos happen, no worries.

I’d try a 100% acetone soak followed with a good rinse in water. No rubbing or scrubbing. Just bathing.

I don't know, maybe a brillo pad? Nitric acid? Dremel wire wheel brush? Sand blasting? Land mine?

Or maybe you could leave it as is and let a dealer deal with it.

Why give up the extra profit to a dealer when all he's gonna do is give it an acetone bath?

yep, pure acetone....
just make sure it isn't the nail polish remover that is not pure, you need the stuff from a hardware store.
soak it overnight or longer if you have to, do not rub it off with anything

What's that "e*Z*est" stuff sold by Apmex and others? Acetone?

How about those wire brushes sold by coinsupplystore.com? Anybody try those?

Is acetone good for cleaning stuff besides gum?
