Work and weather conspired to keep me off the road but a few small rides still
brought some free metal.

2 oz lead wheel weights
4 oz lead battery terminal clamp
13 oz steel
5 oz pop cans

1 golf ball
Pedal to the metal.

A much more productive weekend of riding;

2 lb lead wheel weights
7 oz aluminum
4 oz copper/brass
6 lb 1 oz steel
1 lb 12 oz pop cans

A big chunk of steel was a guide for a chainsaw blade.

1 clad quarter
2 clad dimes
6 zinc pennies
2 copper pennies

1 silver Roosevelt and 1 silver Canadian dime from the Saturday bank run :)
Pedal to the metal.

I hope all of you had a bounteous Thanksgiving full of scrap and bullion coins!

Having time off helped bring in the metal.

7 lb 2 oz steel
2 lb 5 oz pop cans
12 oz lead wheel weights
9 oz brass/copper

5 lb 1 oz small battery that looks like it would be for a motorcycle.

One bolt alone in the steel harvest was 1 lb 6 oz.
The assassins were back, found 4 CO2 propellant cartridges

4 golf balls, the duffers were out in force.

4 zinc pennies
1 clad quarter

1 silver Roosevelt and 1 40% Kennedy from the weekend bank runs
Pedal to the metal.

Bad weather did not stop me. Like the Post Office, I went through rain, to get the metal. But I did not go Postal.

1 lb 11 oz pop cans
11 lb 9 oz steel
1 lb 7 oz lead wheel weights

A good bit of the steel weight came in a chrome exhaust extender.

3 zinc pennies
1 golf ball

2 silver Roosevelts on Saturday
Pedal to the metal.

How do you find all of this stuff - are you riding along the back roads of Prince Georges County, MD :D

Hey Tom,

Keep up the good work I ride several times a week. I have stopped and picked up a few things but nothing like your pickups. I find that the on and off the bike keeps me from my intended task of riding. On several of my longer trips after reading your posts I now notice every little scrap of recycle stuff.

Only one ride this week on Sunday thanks to the work schedule.

1 lb 2 oz steel
7 oz pop cans
7 oz lead wheel weights
3 oz copper/brass
3 oz aluminum

2 zinc pennies
1 plastic toy nickel

The handy-man neighbor gave me an 80 gallon water heater and a dishwasher to scrap.

In the steel was a slip jaw pair of pliers, stamped Japan. I was expecting China.

Scrapper Claus has brought this good boy some metal on two good rides this weekend. I have a feeling
I'll go out on Christmas too (after the presents are opened).

7 lb 12 oz steel
14 oz lead wheel weights
1 lb 5 oz pop cans
6 oz aluminum
3 oz copper/brass

Much of the steel weight came in two large S hooks and a fat disc of steel that looked
like it was punched out of a girder.

3 golf balls

A 5 cent Euro

Another plastic nickel

1 good nickel
3 clad dimes
10 zinc pennies

1 silver Roosevelt from the Saturday bank run ;)
Pedal to the metal.

This thread is motivating me to get a road bike for spring. I have a birthday coming up soon, so I'll see if I can plant the suggestion in my parents' heads...

My bike has really thick tires, bought them with the scrap money found on the bike!

I was so tired (ha!pardon the pun) of fixing flats caused by the demonic thorns we have around here. The bike
takes a beating, mostly from all the abrasive dust and dirt in the chain and gears.

Get an old used bike from a thrift shop if you can.

A Pound of Metal Per Mile Christmas Day Special Report;

I hope Scrapper Clause brought you all plenty of scrap and bullion coins!

Three rides this weekend brought;

1 lb 2 oz pop cans
6 lb 6 oz steel (found 3 spoons on 3 different routes)
1 lb 7 oz lead wheel weights

1 zinc penny

4 silver Roosevelts from the FRIDAY bike bank run (nice to have time off) 8-)

I also topped $800 in hand sorted pre '82 copper pennies, all nicely stacked in $25 dollar boxes.

I added up the itemization of steel, cans, and lead from
the time I began individual tracking, and then rounding off.

54 lbs pop cans, approx worth $30

419 lbs steel, approx worth $25

42 lbs lead, approx worth $7

Beginning 2012 I'm going to keep a running total
of all metals, including coins, found on the bike to see just how much
a full year will bring.

I'll start a new thread titled A Pound of Metal Per Mile 2012.

Tom,
I'm sure your new thread will be every bit as entertaining, interesting, and motivating as this thread. I look forward to reading it and picking up some scrap myself while getting in some exercise.
