A Gold ? for the Experts.

I see all kinds of ceramic mugs or fancy dishes with different amounts of gold trim. It looks like gold to me...but is it painted on? The content has to be low???

That dang color just drives me crazy!

There's all sorts of dishware out there with 24K trim on it, or so it says on the bottom.

The amount of gold used in applications like this is tiny - I don't know if it's possible to make a profit recovering it.

Just like anything else, there are some patterns that are worth good money as collectibles.

There's gold leaf, gold paint and gold electroplating. Electroplating especially can coat objects with just a few cents worth of gold.

If you have access to a lot, and I mean A LOT!!!, you might give goldrefiningforum.com a look. They have a lot of useful information on what you are looking for. Also, I agree that having only a few of these gold trimmed glasses or dished is a waste of time.

I'll buy these if they are dirty cheap, my last set of plates had silver edges. Nice, but dishwashers even course rags can be hard on the metal, and slowly eat the thin layer away. I'm getting back into glass though. I THINK, with gold and silver it's going to be a thin layer, if it's raised, it's just regular paint.

It was raised and very thick but it wasn't just a thin ring around the rim. It was done up almost with too much of it. And it looked like paint. I just have to say that I've never seen anything like that. I should have just bought it and flipped it to feebay. It was from 1958 if that helps any.

I think there was an episode of either "How it's Made" or "How do they do it?" that showed the company making dishes with the 24kt gold trim... will find out the episode and update later!

It is extraordinarily thin. At a minimum you need 300 square feet in surface area to make an ounce of gold.
